SUGAR GROVE, Ill. -- Seniors McCormick Clouser and Zach Yinger each turned in even-par rounds Friday to help the Ball State men's golf team to a good start at the Northern Intercollegiate.
Ball State is tied for fourth place after opening with a 6-over par score of 294 as a team at Rich Harvest Farms. The Cardinals are tied with one NCAA finalist from last year (Houston) and one shot behind another (Purdue) with two rounds to play.
Winthrop sits atop the team leaderboard at 3 under par and holds down the top two spots individually after Zach Seabolt shot a 66 and Sam Whitehead a 69. Winthrop holds a five-shot lead on second-place Ohio State in the 13-team field.
Clouser and Yinger are part of a group tied for eighth place individually after each opened with a round of 72. In addition to the scores from the two seniors, Ball State also counted scores from a pair of freshmen in Michael Makris (74) and Johnny Watts (76). Makris is tied for 25th, while Watts is tied for 39th in the field of 74 players.
James Blackwell was Ball State's non-counting score in round one with a 79.
Play was delayed late in the first round with three teams still on the course. Round two of the tournament is scheduled for Saturday with the final 18 holes to be played Sunday. Live scoring throughout the event is available at birdiefire.com.
