NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas -- Jenna Hague is one stroke off the lead at the Jim West Challenge, helping the Ball State women's golf team to seventh place through two rounds.
The Cardinals own a 36-hole total of 625 (314-311) after day one at the par-71 Bandit Golf Club. Ball State is within 11 strokes of third place in the 15-team field entering Tuesday's final round at the first event of the spring season.
Gonzaga is leading the way at 591 (+23), while tournament host Texas State is second on the team leaderboard at 600 (+32).
Hague holds solo possession of second place at 2-over par 144 (73-71), trailing only Gonzaga's Cierra Min. The Ball State junior is chasing her seventh career victory, which would put her alone atop the Mid-American Conference record book.
Hague, who started on the sixth hole, eagled the par-5 18th in both rounds. She played her final six holes of the day in 3-under par to get back to even for her second round and 2-over for the tournament.
Sophomore Karley Dobis is the second Cardinal on the leaderboard in a tie for 31st at 16-over 158 (77-81), seeking her best finish of the season.
Seniors Meghan Perry (87-76) and Sarah Westaway (80-83) are tied for 52nd at 163. Perry bounced back from posting Ball State's non-counting score in the first round to record the team's second-best score in the afternoon round.
Fellow senior Mary Welch rounds out the Cardinals' lineup at 170 (84-86).
The field at this week's tournament features 11 squads ranked among the top 150 by Golfstat, including Ball State at No. 107.
