Baseball Team Selects 2015 Team Captains
November 03, 2014 | Baseball
Ball State baseball has selected three student-athletes – Scott Baker, Jarrett James and Ryan Spaulding – as captains for the 2015 season.
The captains were selected by their teammates to lead a Ball State team that tallied a 39-18 overall record, a 22-4 Mid-American Conference ledger and won the MAC Regular-Season Championship in 2014.
“This is a tremendous honor for these fine young men,” Ball State head coach Rich Maloney said. “To be selected by your teammates to represent your team is something very special. Ball State baseball has a rich tradition and these three student-athletes have the opportunity to lead the Cardinals to more success in the classroom, in the community and on the field.”
Baker, a senior pitcher, posted a 7-5 overall record with a 4.04 earned-run average for the Cardinals last season. He struck out 61 batters, while walking only 18. Baker was the inaugural winner of the Gregg Olson Award as college baseball's Breakout Player of the Year in 2013 after tallying a 12-2 record for the Cardinals.
James, a senior infielder, appeared in 26 games for Ball State in 2014 and managed a .955 fielding percentage. He was the Cardinals' primary pinch runner and pinch hitter in critical situations last season. James is in his fourth year as a member of Ball State's Student Athlete Advisory Committee.
Spaulding, a junior infielder, batted .292 while starting 54 games for the Cardinals in 2014. He was second on the team with 40 runs-batted-in and was second for Ball State with 92 total bases. Spaulding was named to the 2014 All-MAC Team after ranking in the top-10 in the league in home runs, walks, RBI, runs scored and total bases.
Ball State's 2015 baseball schedule is expected to be available soon.
