Men's Tennis Wraps Up Fall Play at M.A.C Fall Invite

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Ball State men's tennis team wrapped up its 2014 fall competition at the M.A.C Invite this weekend which was hosted by Western Michigan.
The singles matches were played on Friday, Patrick Elliott fell in straight sets in the Flight A singles bracket to Buffalo's Damien David (6-1, 6-3). Lucas Andersen suffered a 7-5, 6-4 loss to Western Michigan's Maik Steiner. In the Flight B singles bracket, Ray Leonard dropped a 6-2, 7-6(5) decision to Simon Formont of Northern Illinois. Jan Jirus advanced to Saturday's quartefinals of the Flight C singles bracket after taking down Tom Hjertonsson in a three set thriller but then lost the next day to Elliot Hureau of Binghamton, 6-2. Collin Rigney and Matt Helm each suffered losses in their respective brackets, while Patrick Downs captured the Cardinals second win of the day after beating the Broncos Marc Shideler (6-1, 6-2).
In doubles competition Saturday, Leonard and Rigney dropped an 8-4 decision in Flight A to Stephen Payne and Andrew Cahn of WMU. Andersen and Elliott defeated Northern Illinois' duo of Fred Cadeuix and Kevin Daun, 8-6. The Ball State twosome also won their match 8-7 (7) over Payne and Cahn for a third place finish. Helm and Jirus teammed up losing 8-6 Saturday to Sebastian Ionescu and Akhil Mehta of Buffalo by a score of 8-6 but rallied back on Sunday for an 8-1 victory over Vihar Shah and Frenk Kote of Binghamton. Downs and Patrick O'Connor lost both their matches in the Flight C doubles bracket.
The Ball State men's tennis team opens its spring season at home Jan. 17 against Detroit Mercy with a 2 p.m. first serve at the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center.
