Women?s Golf Defeats IU for Third at Hoosier Invite
October 19, 2014 | Women's Golf
NOBLESVILLE, Ind. -- Kelsey Sear's 1 up victory in 19 holes Sunday secured a 3-2 win for the Ball State women's golf team over Indiana in the third place match at the Hoosier Fall Invitational.
Allison Lindley finished off a perfect weekend with her third straight win, while Karley Dobis provided the other point for the Cardinals on the final day at Purgatory Golf Club.
“The neat thing about this weekend was everyone played a role; it was a total team effort from start to finish,” Ball State coach Katherine Mowat said. “It was a fun format, and I think it suited us well. I had not coached our team in a match play setting before, but I knew we would be tough competitors. We showed a lot of emotion and energy and fought all the way in every match.”
Lindley topped Indiana's Ana Sanjuan, 4 and 3, while Dobis beat Maria Mancini, 3 and 2, for her second match victory of the weekend. Indiana picked up its first point of the day with a win by Elizabeth Tong over Jenna Hague.
The Cardinals led 2-1 with both Sear and Morgan Nadaline still on the course. Nadaline halved the 18th hole to finish 1 down to Alix Kong, but Sear finished almost simultaneously with a par to defeat Theresa-Ann Jedra on the first extra hole in her match. Her win clinched the team victory for Ball State.
Indiana found itself in the third place contest after falling to Illinois in a match that was completed Sunday morning after being suspended by darkness the night before.
Illinois went on to win the tournament, taking down Fresno State 5-0 in the championship match.
This weekend marked the final tournament on Ball State's fall schedule. The Cardinals will return to action Feb. 15-16 at Texas State's Delta Gamma Spring Challenge in New Braunfels, Texas.
