Cross Country Hosts Ball State Invitational Thursday

MUNCIE, Ind. - - The Ball State cross country team returns to action Thursday at 4 p.m., when it hosts the 5K Ball State Invitational at the Muncie Elks Country Club. In addition to the Cardinals, select members from the Miami RedHawks cross country squad will compete in the 5K race around the Elks.
Thursday's meet marks the fourth running of the Ball State Invitational at the Muncie Elks Country Club, with events being held in 2009 (5K), 2011 (6K) and 2012 (5K).
The 5K course record is 17:30 set by Ali Bishel (2006-07, 09-10) in the 2009 meet (Aug. 31). The 6K course record is 22:05.1 set by Western Michigan's Amber Brunmeier in the 2011 race (Oct. 14). Ball State's MaryKate Mellen (2009-12) won the latest running with a 5K time of 18:08.70 in the 2012 event (Oct. 5).
Thursday's Ball State Invitational also serves as the Cardinals' final tune-up before the 2014 Mid-American Conference Championship which will be run Nov. 1 at the Riverwood Resort Golf Course in Mount Pleasant, Mich. Central Michigan hosts the women's 6K championship race which is slated to start at 11 a.m.
Ball State's runners are coming off a 22nd-place showing in the Women's Gold Race of the Notre Dame Invitational held Oct. 3. For the fourth consecutive meet, senior twin sisters Courtney Edon and Caitlynn Edon (New Palestine, Ind./New Palestine) paced the team by placing 71st (18:02.0) and 152nd (18:52.0), respectively.
