WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Incoming Ball State men's golfer Keegan McKinney won the Indiana Boys State Junior Championship on Friday at Purdue's Kampen Golf Club.
McKinney, a product of Avon, Ind., defeated Columbia City's Tyler Green, 5 and 3, in Friday afternoon's championship match. Earlier in the day, he posted a 5 and 4 semifinal victory over Michael VanDeventer of Columbus.
In total, McKinney won six matches over three days to claim the title. None of his matches went the full 18 holes. McKinney was the No. 5 seed for the match-play portion of the competition after finishing fifth through two rounds of stroke-play qualifying at 1-over par.
A week ago, McKinney finished 12th in a national event at the Junior North & South Amateur Championship, contested at Pinehurst's No. 1 course.
McKinney will be a freshman at Ball State this fall, joining Quentyn Carpenter of Bourbon, Ind., and Jon Schram of Warsaw, Ind., in the Cardinals' incoming class.
