SCOUTING BALL STATE: The Cardinals are 16-17 overall after tallying a 5-3 victory at 19th-ranked Indiana Wednesday afternoon . . . Ball State is 5-7 in the Mid-American Conference after winning a Saturday game at home vs. Central Michigan 6-1, but suffering losses in the Friday and Sunday contests . . . Ball State will travel to Miami University for a three-game series Friday through Sunday.
SCOUTING MIAMI UNIVERSITY: The RedHawks improved to 16-18 overall with a 6-5 home win over Eastern Kentucky Wednesday . . . Miami University is 7-5 in MAC action despite losing three games at home to Kent State last weekend . . . Matt Honchel leads the RedHawks with a .341 batting average, while Alex Johnson leads the team with 27 runs-batted-in.
THE SERIES: Ball State and Miami University have met 129 times in baseball and the RedHawks own a 70-59 all-time advantage . . . The series dates back to 1927 between the two teams . . . In last year's three-game series, the Cardinals managed a Friday and Saturday victory, while the RedHawks won the Sunday game . . . Ball State has won seven of the last nine meetings, including two of the last three played in Oxford, Ohio.
NATIONAL RANKINGS: Scott Baker ranks second in the nation in victories with eight . . . He ranks behind only Tyler Beede of Vanderbilt, who leads the country with nine pitching wins . . . Baker and Chris Marangon are tied for 20th nationally in games started with nine apiece . . . Baker is 56th in the nation with 58 strikeouts . . . Ball State is 67th in the country with 1.88 doubles per game.
MALONEY MILESTONES: Rich Maloney, who tallied his 600th career victory in Ball State's win at Lipscomb Feb. 23, tallied his 300th career conference victory April 6 at his alma mater, Western Michigan . . . Maloney served as Ball State's head coach from 1996-2002 and Michigan's head mentor from 2003-12 before returning to the Cardinals . . . He owns a 302-173 career record in conference games between the Big Ten Conference and Mid-American Conference . . . In addition, Maloney owns a 146-67 record in MAC games and needs four wins to reach the 150 win mark in MAC contests.
