SCOUTING BALL STATE: The Cardinals are 5-6 overall after suffering a pair of losses to the nation's seventh ranked South Carolina Gamecocks Tuesday and Wednesday . . . Ball State suffered a 10-0 loss Tuesday and a 14-4 defeat Wednesday.
SCOUTING COASTAL CAROLINA: Coastal Carolina fell to 4-8 overall after losing a pair of home games to Furman Tuesday and Wednesday . . . Coastal Carolina has lost four straight games, including an extra inning battle with the nation's 10th-ranked North Carolina State Sunday by a 5-4 margin.
SCOUTING OHIO STATE: The Buckeyes, coached by former Ball State head coach Greg Beals, are 6-4 after tallying an 8-1 win over Central Michigan in Deland, Fla., and prior to a Friday game vs. Harvard . . . Beals was the Cardinals head coach from 2003-10 and replaced current head coach Rich Maloney at the time . . . Beals led the Cardinals to three Mid-American Conference West Division Championships and the 2006 MAC Tournament crown, which was the first in school history . . . He led Ball State to the 2006 NCAA Lexington Regional, and a win over top-seeded Kentucky at that Regional.
SCOUTING HARVARD: Harvard enters this weekend's play with a 1-3 record . . . The Crimson opened the season with a 2-1 victory vs. Bucknell . . . Harvard will face Ohio State and Coastal Carolina before battling Ball State Sunday.
THE SERIES VS. THE FIELD: Ball State and Coastal Carolina have met nine times and the Chanticleer's have won all nine meetings . . . The last time the teams met was in 2011 and Coastal Carolina won two games . . . Ball State and Ohio State have met 17 times, and the Buckeyes own a 12-5 all-time advantage . . . The last time the teams met was 2010 when OSU won 8-4 . . . Ball State and Harvard have never met in baseball.
CODY CAMPBELL STARTING STRONG: Cody Campbell leads the Cardinals with a .333 batting average after starting all 11 games this season . . . He also leads Ball State with 20 total bases and is second with eight runs-batted-in . . . Campbell has a team-high five doubles plus one triple in 2013 . . . He managed a .471 batting average in Ball State's four games in Nashville, Tenn. . . . He was 8-for-17 with four runs-batted-in, four runs scored, one double and one triple.
BAKER EARNS THIRD WIN OF SEASON: Scott Baker tallied his third victory of the season in the second game vs. Morehead State Monday . . . Baker started the contest and pitched seven innings, allowing two earned runs and striking out a career-high 11 batters to earn the win and improve to 3-0 on the season . . . He earned his second victory of the season after pitching five innings and allowing only two earned runs, while striking out three in Ball State's win at Lipscomb . . . The victory at Lipscomb was the 600th career win for head coach Rich Maloney . . . Baker is 3-0 with a 2.37 earned-run average . . . He leads the Cardinals with 22 strikeouts on the season.
KEVIN SCHLOTTER MAKING A MARK: Kevin Schlotter, a junior who had played in only 15 games in his career prior to 2013, has played in six games and started three for the Cardinals in 2013 . . . He is batting .333 with four hits in 12 at bats . . . He has four runs-batted-in this season.
BILLY WELLMAN FINDING HIS WAY: Billy Wellman, a junior infielder, is batting .281 through 11 games and leads the Cardinals with 10 runs-batted-in . . . He is tied for second on the team with three doubles plus has one home run and a .469 slugging percentage . . . Wellman batted .400 in Ball State's four games in Nashville, Tenn., earlier this season . . . Wellman was 4-for-10 with four runs-batted-in, three runs scored and one double in Nashville . . . He was second on the team with 26 RBI while scoring 10 runs as a sophomore in 2012 . . . Wellman tied for the team lead with four home runs while posting seven doubles to lead the team with a .510 slugging percentage in 2012 . . . He had nine multiple-hit games and a team-high seven multiple-RBI games last season.
BEEMER IS A SENIOR CLASS AWARD CANDIDATE: Blake Beemer, a senior outfielder/first baseman, is one of 30 candidates for collegiate baseball's Senior CLASS Award . . . Beemer is a candidate because of his notable achievements in four areas of excellence - community, classroom, character and competition . . . He is in his third season as a team captain for the Cardinals . . . Beemer owns a .233 batting average this season with one double and one home run . . . Beemer finished fourth on the team with a .282 batting average, driving in 14 runs while scoring 13, in 2012.
TOP HITTER RETURNS: Sean Godfrey, a junior outfielder, led Ball State with a .328 batting average as he posted 43 hits in 131 at-bats in 2012 . . . He was second on the team with 24 runs scored while driving in 18 runs . . . Godfrey led the team with 13 stolen bases in 15 attempts . . . He posted a team-high 10 doubles while also hitting a home run and a triple . . . Godfrey was second on the team with a .443 slugging percentage . . . He tallied eight multiple-hit games and three multiple-RBI games last season . . . Godfrey is hitting .273 this season and is second for the Cardinals with 19 total bases in 2013 . . . He has two doubles, one triple and one HR this season and owns a .432 slugging percentage.
MARANGON'S PITCHING PERFORMANCES: Chris Marangon, a senior right handed pitcher, started in the Cardinals season opener at Middle Tennessee State and had no decision after pitching 6.1 innings, allowing only four hits and no earned runs . . . In his second start, Marangon got the win vs. Bradley (Feb. 22) in Nashville, Tenn. . . . He pitched six innings, allowing four runs and striking out two . . . Marangon started Monday's first game and pitched 6.2 innings, allowing only one earned run and striking out six, but getting no decision . . . Marangon is 1-0 with a 2.37 earned-run average this season and his tied for team-high honors with 19.0 innings pitched . . . He started the 2012 season in the bullpen and moved into the weekend rotation during Mid-American Conference play . . . Marangon held opponents to a team-low .222 batting average, which ranked third-lowest in the MAC last season.
BULLPEN SHOWING POSITIVE SIGNS: Jon Cisna and Matt Johnsen both have had postive appearances out of the bullpen for the Cardinals . . . Cisna has made four appearances for Ball State and owns a 1-0 record, one save and a 1.08 earned-run average . . . He was credited the win in the first game vs. Morehead State Monday . . . Cisna pitched the final 2.1 innings, allowing only two hits, while striking out three . . . He tallied his first save of the year at Lipscomb (Feb. 23) after pitching four innings, allowing only one hit and no runs while striking out two . . . Johnsen made his first appearance of the season vs. Bradley (Feb. 24) and pitched two innings, allowing no earned runs and striking out three batters . . . In two appearances this season, Johnsen has a 2.08 ERA in 4.1 innings pitched with four strikeouts and four walks on the season.
