Benyrova Tabbed Top MAC Defensive Performer
September 24, 2012 | Soccer
The sophomore defender from Prague, Czech Republic, made an impact on both ends of the field in Ball State's home victories over Buffalo and Akron. She scored a game-winning goal and assisted on another goal over the weekend while also continuing to frustrate opponents with her defense.
Benyrova tallied her second career game-winner Friday against Buffalo on a penalty kick in the 80th minute to lift Ball State to a 2-1 victory. She then assisted on the Cardinals' first goal Sunday in the team's 2-1 win over Akron when she served a beautiful ball into the box that teammate Kalynn Flanagan re-directed to Jasmine Moses for a score.
On the other end of the field, Benyrova's strong defensive play in both games provided Ball State's opponents virtually no chances of her side of the field. She anchored a back line that surrendered just nine shots on goal for the weekend.
Benyrova is tied for second on the Ball State team with five points this season, and she now has 12 career points in her two years with the Cardinals (four goals and four assists). She was also named the MAC Defensive Player of the Week once last season.
Ball State (5-3-2) is now 2-0 in MAC play for the first time since 2007. The Cardinals, who have lost just once in their past six outings, hit the road this week to continue league action Friday at Kent State and Sunday at Ohio.
