March 24, 2012 | Softball
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The Ball State softball team (18-7) captured a 3-2 win over Cal Poly in its night cap at the Mustang Classic at Bob Janssen Field Friday.
Cal Poly got on the board first after scoring two runs at the bottom of the first inning. Ball State answered back in the top of the second after a Mustang fielding error allowing right fielder Loren Cihlar and second baseman Taylor Cox to cross the plate. Both Cihlar and Cox reached base after hitting singles.
After a scoreless third, Ball State left fielder Jennifer Gilbert started the fourth inning off with a stand up double. Gilbert advanced to third off of a wild pitch. With runners at each corner, catcher Amanda Montalto hit an RBI single to put the Cardinals up 3-2 over Cal Poly. First baseman Taylor Rager lined out into a double play which ended the inning.
Both teams went scoreless in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. Kim Mazzapica improved to 9-2 on the season with victory on the mound after 6.2 innings of work she gave up two runs off of six hits while striking out six.
