MUNCIE, Ind. - - Senior middle blocker Jennifer Boyd (Evans City, Pa./Seneca Valley H.S.) of the Ball State women's volleyball team has been named to the 2011 Academic All-Mid-American Conference Team as announced by the league office.
A total of 18 student-athletes were named to the team. The number of honorees on the Academic All-MAC Team is the number that is set for the specific sport or 33% of the number of nominees, whichever is greater.
Boyd, an exercise science major with a 3.779 grade-point average, is earning Academic All-MAC honors for the first time in her career after helping lead the Cardinals to the NCAA Tournament and a 25-8 (12-4 MAC) overall record in 2011.
An All-MAC First Team selection in 2011, Boyd played in 32 of BSU's 33 matches, earning 27 starts. She led the team and ranked fifth in the MAC with a .350 attack percentage in league-only matches, while hitting .300 for the season.
She blasted double-digit kills in nine matches, including a season-high 14 kills in the win over Murray State (Sept. 3) and at Toledo (Oct. 27). Boyd hit .300-or-better in 16 matches, including a season-high .700 (14-0-20) rate of success against Murray State. She also tallied a .471 (8-0-17) hitting mark in BSU's NCAA Tournament showdown with Louisville.
At the net, Boyd ranked second on the squad with 66 total blocks, including a season-high five total blocks on three occasions; at IUPUI (Aug. 30), vs. Western Michigan (Oct. 1) and in the MAC Tournament semifinal match versus Northern Illinois (Nov. 19). She tallied at least one block in 26 matches, with three-or-more 11 times, plus earned recognition on the Purdue Invitational All-Tournament Team.
To earn Academic All-MAC status, a student-athlete must excel in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade-point average and participate in at least 50 percent of the contests for their particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
