Field Hockey Hosts Central Michigan Saturday

MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State field hockey team hosts Mid-American Conference foe Central Michigan Saturday at noon from the BSU Turf Field. The Cardinals have tallied an all-time record of 44-55 (.444) at BSU Turf Field in Muncie, Ind. since the facility opened Sept. 12, 1998.
LAST TIME OUT: Ball State scored three goals en route to a 3-0 shutout victory against Miami (OH) Wednesday afternoon at the BSU Turf Field. The Cardinals picked up their first victory of the 2011 season and opened MAC play with a bang, capitalizing on 3-of-7 shots on goal.
Junior midfielder Marisa Weachter (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central), senior forward Devanny Kuhn (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy) and freshman midfielder Sanne Hermans (The Hague, Holland) scored for Ball state during the contest, while freshman goalkeeper Haley Fusting (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy) made three saves during 70 minutes of action.
SCOUTING BALL STATE: The Cardinals enter the weekend contest with a 1-6 record on the season and 1-0 tally in league play after recording the victory versus the RedHawks Wednesday. Ball State averages 9.6 shots per game, with Kuhn leading the squad with 4.4. Hermans paces the Cardinals with two goals and two assists, while Fusting and Chelsea Mitchell (Stevens, Pa./Cocalico) have shared 490:00 in goal, including recording 45 and 14 saves, respectively.
SCOUTING CENTRAL MICHIGAN: The Chippewas enter weekend play with a 2-4 record after falling to the Michigan State Spartans, 2-1, Wednesday at the Field Hockey Complex. Freshman forward Cayleigh Immelmann and sophomore forward Juliana Makrinos lead Central Michigan's charge with three goals and two assists each, while junior netminder Anastasia Netto has tallied 422:24 in the cage and 24 saves, allowing 11 goals.
SERIES HISTORY: Friday's game marks the 64th time Ball State and Central Michigan will meet, as the Cardinals own the 40-23 all-time series advantage against the Chippewas. The teams last met during the 2010 season as Ball State fell to Central Michigan, 3-1, Oct. 31 at the BSU Turf Field on Senior Day. Kristen Falk (Pennsburg, Pa./Perkiomen) finished the contest with three shots while Mitchell accumulated five saves in the cage.
COACHES IN THE CROWD: The 2011 season stands as the second year for head coach Beth Maddox at the helm of the Ball State University field hockey team with assistant coach Jacque DeMarco, in addition to student coaches Morgan Cloutier and Brittany Hammer. Maddox is the sixth head coach in Ball State history. Under her direction, the Cardinals have brought in 10 freshmen for the 2011 season, in addition to nine current upperclassmen. Ball State's international flair to the 2011 roster features Hermans from The Hague, Holland.
RETURNING PLAYERS: The Cardinals return seven seniors in an experienced upperclassmen group, including Falk, forward CJ Hermes (Louisville, Ky./Mercy Academy), Kuhn, defender Gretchen Lulow (Ballwin, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy), midfielder Caitlin Maguire (Louisville, Ky./Presentation Academy), Mitchell and defender Katie Norris (Louisville, Ky./Mercy Academy), while defender Devon Bell (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) and Weachter make up the two-member junior class.
NEWCOMERS: The squad welcomes ten freshmen to the 2011 roster in forward Charlie Digby (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams), Fusting, midfielder Leanne Goldblatt (Yorktown Heights, N.Y. (Lakeland), Hermans, defender Laura Malinoski (Eastampton, N.J. (Rancocas Valley Regional), defender Jenna Rosenberry (Manheim, Pa./Elizabethtown Area), midfielder Tarel Teach (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes), forward Kaitlin Thompson (San Carlos, Calif./St. Francis), midfielder Bianca Velez (Virginia Beach, Va./Floyd E. Kellam) and midfielder Tori Widrick (Cazenovia, N.Y./Cazenovia).
2010 MAC HONORS: Kuhn and Lulow earned First Team and Second Team All-MAC honors, respectively, in addition to Academic All-MAC honors. Also, Hermes, Lulow, Maguire and recent graduates Hannah Jones, Kaitlan Mitchell and Maura Sawicki earned National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) National Academic Squad honors.
