Men's Tennis Begins Fall Play at Marquette

MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The Ball State men's tennis team kicked off the 2011 fall competition at the 36th annual Milwaukee Tennis Classic hosted by Marquette.
Sophomore Austin Smith was the lone Cardinal to start competition off in the 9 a.m. match after taking on Wisconsin's Jack Larsen. Smith fell to Larsen in two sets 6-1, 6-1.
The Cardinals played three doubles matches at 11 a.m. versus Big Ten foe Wisconsin. Junior Dalton Albertin paired up with newcomer Ray Leonard, losing by a close 9-8 decision to Alexander Kostanov and Billy Bertha. The BSU twosome of Zane Smith and Alexandre Brym along with teammate duo Derek Carpenter and Austin Sansone also suffered losses to the Badgers.
In singles action Ball State took on host Marquette in the afternoon match where the Cardinals won five out of the nine single matches that were played. Austin Smith, freshman Patrick Elliott, Leonard and junior Alex Doherty all captured two set victories.
The Ball State men's tennis team will resume action at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic Saturday.
