Men's Hoops Sweeps Canadian Trip With 101-67 Victory

NANAIMO, British Columbia, Canada - The Ball State men's basketball team improved to 4-0 on its Canadian trip as the Cardinals downed Vancouver Island 101-67 Sunday afternoon. The victory marked the third time on the trip the Cardinals reach the century mark in scoring as they averaged 101.5 points in the four-game excursion.
Three different Cardinals posted double-doubles in the victory, while all five starters reached double figures. Sophomore forward Matt Kamieniecki (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) posted his second double dip on the trip as he grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds and scored 11 points. Sophomore forward Chris Bond (Gary, Ind./Bowman Academy) also tallied a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds while also dishing out three assists and notching three steals.
Senior captain Randy Davis (Plymouth, Ind./Plymouth) rounded out the double dips as he scored 14 points and dished out a game-high 10 assists while only committing one turnover. Junior guard Jauwan Scaife (Muncie, Ind./Muncie Central) led the team in scoring once again as he tallied a game-high 21 points in 23 minutes of action.
Ball State started out strong against Vancouver Island as it closed out the first quarter on an 11-3 run to take an early 23-11 lead after the first 10 minutes. Senior guard Pierre Sneed (Chicago, Ill./Simeon) sparked the Cardinals off the bench with four points in the run while Scaife tallied seven first quarter points.
The Cardinals came out of the break and scored the first nine points of the second quarter to take its largest lead of the first half at 32-11. Bond got things going with back-to-back baskets in transition while sophomore Jesse Berry (Lafayette, Ind./Jefferson) capped the run with a fast break basket.
Vancouver Island responded to the deficit as it posted a 16-2 run to trim the Cardinals lead to seven at 34-27. The Mariners used the three-point shot to get back in the game as they nailed four in the run, including back-to-back three-pointers by Richard Townsend off the bench. The Cardinals slowed the run as Kamieniecki scored on two straight possessions as BSU entered the halftime break with a 45-34 lead.
Ball State connected on 43.2 percent (16-of-37) from the field and 25.0 percent (3-of-12) from three-point land in the first half. Scaife led the Cardinals with 11 first half points while Davis added eight points. Ball State held a 27-23 advantage on the glass led by Kamieniecki's nine rebounds.
Vancouver Island connected on 33.3 percent (13-of-39) from the field but hit 40 percent (8-of-20) from three-point land. The Mariners were led by Townsend's nine points off the bench while Brandon Jones also added nine points as a reserve. Both players scored all of their points from beyond the arc in the first half.
The Cardinals ended any doubt in the game at the start of the third quarter as they posted a 20-3 run to open up a 65-37 lead. Scaife was the catalyst as he scored eight points, including two three-pointers, while Jones and Bond each added four points apiece.
Ball State rounded out the contest with a 17-5 run in the fourth quarter to take its largest lead of the afternoon at 98-62. Freshman guard Zeke Chapman (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral) hit a pair of three-pointers in the run while Berry added a third.
The Cardinals finished the game shooting 46.6 percent (34-of-73) from the field and 37.9 percent (11-of-29) from long range. Ball State also hit 22-of-30 (73.3%) from the charity stripe while out-rebounding the Mariners 60-37.
Chapman finished with nine points while Sneed added seven points and seven rebounds. Freshman forward Aaron Adeoye (Marion, Ill./Marion) grabbed eight rebounds as the Cardinals posted 17 offensive rebounds and scored 23 second chance points.
Vancouver Island ended the game shooting 31.9 percent (23-of-72) from the field and 35.3 percent (12-of-34) from long range. Jones led the Mariners with 16 points off the bench while Townsend ended with 12 points. Jacob Thom scored 15 points in 30 minutes of action for VIU as he hit three three-pointers.
The Cardinals posted four wins on the Canadian Trip with victories over Quest University (104-61), Trinity Western University (114-71), Victoria Select (88-82) and Vancouver Island University (101-67).
