Soccer Tops Cincinnati In Exhibition Battle
August 12, 2011 | Soccer
\ MUNCIE, Ind. - - In its inaugural game at the Briner Sports Complex, the Ball State soccer team scored a 1-0 victory over Big East foe Cincinnati in exhibition play Friday afternoon. BSU also held an 11-7 advantage in shots for the contest, which was comprised of three 30-minute periods.
"Both teams battled hard today," said second-year head coach Craig Roberts. "I was delighted with the consistent performance from every player on our squad, specifically the freshmen who were playing in their first collegiate game against a very strong Big East opponent. I thought our freshman did a very good job of rising to the occasion."
The lone goal of the contest was provided by Ball State freshman Hannah Chadick (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley Northwest) who was named the 2011 Gatorade Kansas Girls Soccer Player of the Year.
In the 13th-minute of the first period, Chadick collected a pass from classmate Pavla Benyrova (Prague, Czech Republic/Gymnasium Prague 9), who played three seasons with the Czech Republic National Team from 2009-11, juked out a defender and slip a shot past the Bearcats' goalie from the penalty shot mark. The goal came on the first shot of the afternoon from either team.
The Ball State defense took over from there, limiting Cincinnati to just seven shots over the remaining 77 minutes of action, including just four on goal. Junior goalie Aubrey Buehler (Waukesha, Wisc./Tennessee-Martin/Waukesha North) and sophomore Layne Schramm (The Colony, Texas/The Colony) combined for the shutout victory with two saves apiece.
"Overall, I thought our players did very well in all areas of the game," added Roberts. "This game is a great foundation to build on."
The Ball State soccer team opens the 2011 regular season next Friday (Aug. 19), when it battles Murray State at 5 p.m. (CT) in its first of two games at the Western Kentucky University Tournament in Bowling Green, Ky.
