Men's Hoops Tops Century Mark In Victory Over Quest

SQUAMISH, British Columbia, Canada - The Ball State men's basketball team opened its foreign tour of Canada with an impressive 104-61 victory over Quest University. The game was played with international basketball FIBA rules, including four 10-minute quarters.
Six different Cardinals scored in double figures in the victory while all 11 Cardinals scored at least four points. The Cardinals scored 59 points in the second half as they hit 65.8 percent (25-of-38) from the field in the frame.
Senior captain Randy Davis (Plymouth, Ind./Plymouth) turned in a stellar all-around stat line as he scored 15 points, dished out a game-high eight assists and notched a game-high six steals in just 22 minutes of action. Junior guard Jauwan Scaife (Muncie, Ind./Muncie Central) led all scorers with 19 points as he hit 7-of-18 from the field, including five three-pointers.
Sophomore forward Chris Bond (Gary, Ind./Bowman Academy) also posted a strong all-around performance from the starting lineup. Bond posted 14 points, dished out seven assists, grabbed six rebounds and posted three steals in 24 minutes of play. He connected on 6-of-9 from the field and hit both of his free throws.
Ball State and Quest battled for much of the first quarter with the Kermodes owning an 18-15 lead after Dylan Kular hit a three-pointer with 1:09 left in the opening quarter. Senior forward Jarrod Jones (Michigan City, Ind./Michigan City) narrowed the deficit to two as he hit the first of two free throws and Scaife nailed a three-pointer coming off a screen with five seconds left in the quarter to give the Cardinals a 19-18 lead.
Quest opened the second quarter and moved out to a 23-20 lead as it continued to hit from the outside. The Cardinals settled in and posted an 11-0 run to take a 31-23 lead. Scaife nailed back-to-back three-pointers while Bond scored five quick points, including an old-fashioned three-point play.
The Kermodes did not back down as they posted a 9-2 run to trim the Cardinals' lead to one at 33-32. Ball State closed out the second quarter on a 12-1 run to head into the locker room with a 45-33 lead. Senior Pierre Sneed (Chicago, Ill./Simeon) scored back-to-back baskets to key the run while Davis capped the half as he notched his fourth steal in the backcourt and scored the final basket on a fast break layup.
Ball State connected on 41.0 percent (16-of-39) from the field and 26.3 percent (5-of-19) from long range in the half. The Cardinals committed 10 first half turnovers but out-rebounded the Kermodes by a 26-17 margin. All 11 Cardinals scored in the first half with Scaife leading the charge with nine points while Bond added eight. Quest connected on 38.7 percent (12-of-31) from the field in the first half but hit 40.0 percent (6-of-15) from long range.
Quest opened the third quarter with a three-pointer before Ball State ended any doubt in the contest as it posted a 20-2 run to take a 65-38 lead. Six different Cardinals scored in the run with Scaife leading the way with five points while Bond chipped in four. Sophomore Matt Kamieniecki (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) also added two baskets in the spurt as he continued to attack the glass in the second half.
The Cardinals poured on the points down the stretch, including a 12-0 run to take an 88-50 lead with 6:40 left in the fourth quarter. Davis keyed the final run as he scored six straight points, including a deep three-pointer in transition.
Ball State reached the century mark with 41 seconds left in the contest as Bond came up with a steal in the front court and scored on the fast break. Scaife capped the contest as he nailed a three-pointer on the Cardinals' final possession.
Ball State finished the game shooting 53.2 percent (41-of-77) from the field and hit 33.3 percent (10-of-30) from long range. The Cardinals dished out 28 assists in the victory and out-rebounded the Kermodes by a 49-35 margin. Ball State also forced Quest into 27 turnovers as it recorded 16 steals, led by Davis' six. The Cardinals turned those miscues into 35 points while also scoring 22 on the fast break.
Jones added 12 points and eight rebounds in 23 minutes of action as he was 5-of-7 from the field. Kamieniecki was the only starter not to reach double figures as he finished with eight points, but he led all players with nine rebounds.
Freshman Aaron Adeoye (Marion, Ill./Marion) chipped in 10 points, eight rebounds and three assists off the bench as he was 4-of-5 from the field. Sneed rounded out the Cardinals' double figure scorers as he posted 10 points on 3-of-5 shooting from the field and 4-of-5 from the charity stripe.
Quest finished the night shooting 33.8 percent (22-of-65) from the field and 44.0 percent (11-of-25) from three-point land. Kular led the Kermodes with 16 points off the bench as he hit 6-of-11 from the field, including four three-pointers. Dany Charlery and Jesse Norris each chipped in 11 points in the losing effort for Quest.
Ball State will continue its Canadian trip Friday evening as it faces off against Trinity Western University. The game is set for a 7 p.m. (PT) tip-off at the Richmond Olympic Oval.
