Lorenz Places 2nd In Heptathlon At MAC Championships
May 13, 2011 | Track & Field
DEKALB, Ill. - - Redshirt junior multi-event specialist Thekla Lorenz (Hamburg, Germany) earned eight points for the Cardinals with a second-place finish in the heptathlon on the second day of competition at the 2011 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships hosted by Northern Illinois at the NIU Track & Field Complex.
Due to severe weather in the area, the only two events to take place on the second day of the three-day meet were the completion of the heptathlon and the preliminaries of the 1,500m run.
With just five events scored, the Cardinals jumped to eighth in the overall standings thanks to Lorenz's eight-point effort. Kent State remains in the lead with 43 points, followed by Buffalo (21), Akron (20), Miami (15), Ohio (11), Central Michigan (10), Eastern Michigan (10), BSU (8), Bowling Green (8), Western Michigan (2), Toledo (2) and Northern Illinois (0).
Lorenz started the final day of the heptathlon with a 753-point and second-place effort in the long jump, posting a leap of 18-07.75. She followed with a second-place throw of 112-08 (559 points) in the javelin throw, while concluding the competition with a fourth-place time of 2:31.71 (672 points) in the 800m run. She finished the heptathlon with 4893 points.
In the 1500m run prelims, sophomore MaryKate Mellen (Michigan City, Ind./Michigan City H.S.) missed qualifying for the finals by 0.24 of a second, finishing the race in 13th with a time of 4:39.07. Kent State's Kelly Gephart edged her out for the final slot in the finals with a time of 4:38.83.
