Tyler Merkel Wins Golf Event; Ball State Seventh

Tyler Merkel, a freshman member of the Ball State men's golf team, won the Adidas Hoosier Invitational at the Indiana University Golf Course in Bloomington, Ind., and the Cardinals placed seventh as a team.
Merkel tallied a 71-68-70=209 to win the event by one stroke over David Erdy of Indiana and Kent Monas of Cleveland State.
Merkel helped the Cardinals to a seventh-place finish in the 16-team field. Ball State managed a 291-294-291=876, while Indiana won the event with a 279-283-290=852.
Eric Steger tied for 27th with a 73-76-72=221, while Joe Gasser tied for 29th with a 73-75-74=222. Tony Lazzara managed a 75-75-76=226 and Alex Stinson tallied a 74-78-75=227.
Brodie Williams and Zac Treash competed as individuals at the event. Williams tied for 24th with a 77-68-75=220, while Treash tied for 43rd with a 75-73-77=225.
Ball State was joined in the tournament by Butler, Cleveland State, Detroit Mercy, Evansville, George Washington, Indiana, Iowa State, IPFW, IUPUI, Marquette, Oakland, Wright State and Youngstown State.
