CLEARWATER, Fla. - Ball State fell to Michigan, 8-3, in a hard-fought battle to close out the second day of action in the Under Armour Invitational at the Eddie C. Moore Complex. With the win, the Cardinals own an even 2-2 tally in tournament action and 8-5 record overall.

Michigan outhit Ball State, however the Cardinals committed one error compared to the Wolverines' three. Michigan got off to a quick start in the top of the first inning, but Ball State responded when senior Alicia Barkley (Oklahoma City, Okla./Putnam City) advanced to third and scored on a passed ball.

After the Wolverines scored in the top of the second inning, the Cardinals secured the tie when a Barkley RBI-single through the right side brought sophomore Hannah Zimmerman (Indianapolis, Ind./Scecina Memorial), pinch running for freshman third baseman Taylor Rager (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern), home.

Freshman Jennifer Gilbert (McKinney, Texas/McKinney) scored Ball State's final run in the bottom of the third inning after registering a double to right center and advancing to third base on a passed ball. Then freshman Audrey Bickel (Munster, Ind./Andrean) drove Gilbert in on an RBI-ground out.

Junior pitchers Audrey Workman (Wickenburg, Ariz./Wickenburg) and Kim Mazzapica (Palm Harbor, Fla./East Lake) combined for just over six innings in the circle, as the duo allowed for 10 hits, while walking 13 and fanning one.

Ball State will complete its play in the tournament Sunday against East Tennessee State at noon.

Head coach Craig Nicholson and the team open the home portion of the 2011 season in a doubleheader versus Dayton at the BSU Softball Complex, beginning at 3 p.m. on March 24.
