March 18, 2011 | Softball
BOTETOURT, Va. - The Ball State softball team shutout Georgetown, 8-0, in five innings Friday evening to close the first day of the Radford Invitational at the Botetourt Sports Complex. With two victories on the day, the Cardinals improve to 13-10 on the season and 2-0 in tournament play.
The Cardinals outhit their opponent, 7-2, and committing no errors in the contest versus the Hoyas' two. With the bases loaded in the top of the second inning, freshman first baseman Taylor Rager's (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) RBI-ground out scored sophomore left fielder Amanda Carpenter (Santee, Calif./Santana) to put Ball State's first run up on the board.
The Cardinals continued their hot hitting in the top of the fourth inning as Rager doubled to left field and junior catcher Amanda Montalto (Las Vegas, Nev./Palo Verde) came around to score. Soon after, junior second baseman Alison Mercado (Perris, Calif./Arizona Western) reached first base on a fielder's choice and freshman Katrina Morales (Whittier, Calif./St. Paul), pinch running for senior third baseman Kate Wilczynski (Tucson, Ariz./Canyon Del Oro), scored. To close the scoring for the inning, senior center fielder Lisa Rozanski's (Tampa, Fla./Daytona Beach CC) RBI-ground-out to Georgetown's shortstop scored Rager.
In the top of the fourth inning, Montalto doubled to right-center field, driving in Carpenter, and fueling the final spark for the Cardinals to secure the victory. Pinch hitting for Rozanski, senior first baseman Kristy Stratton (Paw Paw, Mich./Paw Paw) whacked a double to left center field to score Mercado, Wilczynski and Montalto.
Senior shortstop Alicia Barkley (Oklahoma City, Okla./Putnam City) went 2-for-2 at the plate, good for a perfect seven hits in seven appearances on the day. Rager and Montalto both went 1-for-3 versus Georgetown, while junior pitcher Audrey Workman (Wickenburg, Ariz./Wickenburg) dished up five innings of two-hit pitching, in addition to walking two Hoyas batters and striking out seven.
Ball State continues the Radford Invitational Saturday with matchups versus Pittsburgh and host Radford at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. The Cardinals will complete their play in the tournament Sunday against the Robert Morris Colonials at 9 a.m.
