Five Softball Players Named to All-Tournament Team

MUNCIE, Ind. - Ball State's softball team had five players named to the Phyllis Rafter Memorial All-Tournament Team for their performances in the three-day event at the Twin Creeks Softball Complex in Woodstock, Ga.
Sophomore Audra Sanders (Lynnville, Ind./Tecumseh) earned pitching honors, while senior shortstop Alicia Barkley (Oklahoma City, Okla./Putnam City), senior right fielder Alyssa Collins (Fortville, Ind./Mt. Vernon), junior catcher Amanda Montalto (Las Vegas, Nev./Palo Verde) and freshman outfielder Jennifer Gilbert (McKinney, Texas/McKinney) collected position accolades.
Sanders amassed a perfect 3-0 mark with a 1.74 ERA. She pitched 20 innings and allowed for 17 hits and six walks, in addition to fanning 24 batters in wins against Kennesaw State, Mercer and Bowling Green. Versus the Owls, Sanders pitched seven innings, allowed for seven hits and two walks, in addition to collecting four strikeouts. Against the Bears, she struck out 10 batters in seven innings, while allowing eight hits. Sunday, Sanders dished up just over six innings of two-hit pitching, in addition to recording 10 strikeouts versus the Falcons.
Montalto earned all-tournament honors as a catcher after batting .462, going 6-for-13, recording three runs, five RBI, four doubles, and two home runs. Against Kennesaw State, she blasted her first home run of the season to right center field and she pounded out her second home run of the tournament against Tennessee State into right center field.
In five games, Barkley tallied an astounding .474 batting average, seven runs, four RBI, and two doubles, and the season's first triple, in addition to going 9-for-19. Barkley also recorded a team-high four stolen bases against Kennesaw State, Tennessee State, Mercer and Georgia State.
Collins managed eight hits, one double against the Falcons, four RBI, one stolen base versus the Tigers, and five runs scored in five games, while batting .500. Collins stood out at the plate versus Bowling Green after batting .667 and going 2-for-3. Against Tennessee State, the right fielder collected three hits in four appearances, one RBI and batted .714.
Gilbert earned a spot on the all-tournament team as the designated player. Playing in her second tournament with the Cardinals, she had a phenomenal weekend, going 10-for-19, batting .526, in addition to tallying five runs, 10 RBI, and two doubles and home runs against Tennessee State and Georgia State.
Ball State returns to action next weekend at the Under Armour Invitational in Clearwater, Fla. where the squad will face Arkansas, USF, Michigan, Villanova and East Tennessee State.
Head coach Craig Nicholson and the team open the home portion of the 2011 season in a doubleheader versus Dayton at the BSU Softball Complex, beginning at 3 p.m. on March 24.
