Softball Closes Phyllis Rafter Memorial With Split
February 28, 2011 | Softball
WOODSTOCK, Ga. - On the final day of the Phyllis Rafter Memorial, the Ball State Softball team recorded a split by defeating MAC foe Bowling Green, 9-6, and falling to Georgia State, 5-2, at the Twin Creeks Softball Complex. The Cardinals closed the tournament with a 4-1 record and the squad owns a 6-3 overall mark on the season.
Bowling Green jumped out to an early lead in the first inning, as the Falcons scored on six quick runs. Senior shortstop Alicia Barkley (Oklahoma City, Okla./Putnam City) put Ball State's first run on the board after sophomore left fielder Amanda Carpenter (Santee, Calif./Santana) singled up the middle.
The Cardinals recorded a strong second inning as freshman third baseman Audrey Bickel's (Munster, Ind./Andrean) RBI-double to right center brought home junior catcher Amanda Montalto (Las Vegas, Nev./Palo Verde). Then, freshman first baseman Taylor Rager (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) singled to center field and junior second baseman Alison Mercado (Perris, Calif./Arizona Western) bunted. A passed ball sent Bickel home and Bowling Green freshman pitcher Erin Greenwalt walked senior center fielder Lisa Rozanski (Tampa, Fla./Daytona Beach CC).
Second later, senior right fielder Alyssa Collins' (Fortville, Ind./Mt. Vernon) 2-RBI single through the left side brought Mercado and Rager home and Gilbert singled into right field to score Rozanski. Montalto blasted a 2-RBI double along the left field line, which brought Gilbert and Collins back around to score for the squad, and give the Cardinals an 8-6 lead.
Bowling Green was unable to produce any more runs as Ball State continued its hot hitting in the bottom of the fourth inning. Barkley doubled to center field, advanced to third and scored when Gilbert reached on a fielder's choice.
Versus the Falcons, Collins stood out at the plate after batting .667 and going 2-for-3. Junior pitcher Kim Mazzapica (Palm Harbor, Fla./East Lake) and sophomore hurler Audra Sanders (Lynnville, Ind./Tecumseh) split seven innings in the circle. Mazzapica allowed for six hits, while Sanders dished up just over six innings of two-hit pitching, in addition to recording 10 strikeouts.
Gilbert led Ball State versus Georgia State, as she collected two hits in three appearances and her second career home run in two days with the Cardinals. Gilbert whacked her 2-RBI home run to right field in the top of the first inning to score Barkley. Georgia State quickly returned the favor as senior first baseman Lauren Jones' home run to center field ignited a five-run spark for the Panthers to complete the scoring for the day.
Workman tallied the loss for the Cardinals after allowing three hits and walking three in the bottom of the first inning, while Mazzapica pitched for six innings, allowing for two hits and fanning two Panthers batters.
Ball State returns to action next weekend at the Under Armour Invitational in Clearwater, Fla. where the squad will face Arkansas, USF, Michigan, Villanova and East Tennessee State.
Head coach Craig Nicholson and the team open the home portion of the 2011 season in a doubleheader versus Dayton at the BSU Softball Complex, beginning at 3 p.m. on March 24.
