February 20, 2011 | Softball
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - The Ball State Softball team closed out the Austin Peay Spring Invitational with another split, falling 3-2 to UMKC and taking a 9-2 contest from host Austin Peay at Lady Govs Field. After the season-opening tournament this weekend, the Cardinals own a 2-2 mark on the season.
Versus the Roos, senior outfielder Lisa Rozanski (Tampa, Fla./Daytona Beach CC) scored a run in the top of the sixth inning, while senior Kate Wilczynski (Tucson, Ariz./Canyon Del Oro) drove in sophomore outfielder Amanda Carpenter (Santee, Calif./Santana) in the top of the seventh inning to lead the Cardinals offensively.
Sophomore pitcher Audra Sanders (Lynnville, Ind./Tecumseh) allowed ten hits and three runs and fanned seven Roos in six innings.
In Ball State's victory against Austin Peay, the Cardinals opened the scoring first in the bottom of the first inning when freshman Jennifer Gilbert (McKinney, Texas/McKinney) reached on an error and sent senior shortstop Alicia Barkley (Oklahoma City, Okla./Putnam City) home.
Ball State came back in the bottom of the third inning as a Wilczynski double down the left field line sparked a 3-0 run for the Cardinals. Carpenter and sophomore catcher Amanda Montalto (Las Vegas, Nev./Palo Verde) crossed home plate before senior first baseman Kristy Stratton's (Paw Paw, Mich./Paw Paw) double to left center brought freshman Katrina Morales (Whittier, Calif./St. Paul) around to make it a 4-1 margin.
After the Lady Governors responded with a run in the top of the fifth, the Cardinals widened the margin as an RBI-double from Carpenter drove Gilbert to home plate.
Ball State scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning to seal the victory. Junior second baseman Alison Mercado (Perris, Calif./Arizona Western) led off the scoring by advancing on a fielder's choice and sending Rozanski, pinch running for Wilczynski, around to home plate. Freshman third baseman Audrey Bickel (Munster, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) closed out the contest with a three-RBI home run to center field.
Mercado finished the contest with six assists, while Barkley, Wilczynski, Stratton and junior hurler Kim Mazzapica (Palm Harbor, Fla./East Lake) collected one apiece.
Mazzapica, junior pitcher Audrey Workman (Wickenburg, Ariz./Wickenburg) and Sanders combined for six innings. Mazzapica allowed three hits and a run, Workman scattered two hits and collected two strikeouts, while Sanders earned the save with two strikeouts in the final innings.
Ball State returns to action next weekend at the Phyllis Rafter Memorial in Woodstock, Ga. where the squad will face Kennesaw State, Tennessee State, Mercer, Bowling Green and Georgia State. Catch all of the Cardinals' home games at the BSU Softball Complex, starting Thursday, March 24 at 3 p.m. against the Dayton Flyers in a double-header.
