CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - The Ball State Softball Team opened the 211 season with a 8-0 shutout against Belmont, but fell 1-0 to Cleveland State during the first day of the Austin Peay Spring Invitational at Lady Govs Field.

Against the Bruins in the second inning, freshman Audrey Bickel (Munster, Ind./Andrean) put the Cardinals on the board first as she doubled up the middle and sent sophomore Amanda Carpenter (Santee, Calif./Santana) home. Senior Alyssa Collins (Fortville, Ind./Mt. Vernon) then blasted a double to left center and brought Bickel around to score.

The Cardinals continued their scoring opportunities in the third frame when an RBI-single from freshman Taylor Rager (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) sparked a 3-0 run for Ball State.

In the fourth inning, freshman Jennifer Gilbert (McKinney, Texas/McKinney) brought junior Alison Mercado (Perris, Calif./Arizona Western) in to score on a sac fly to right field.

Then in the fifth frame, Collins singled down the left field line and plated freshman Katrina Morales (Whittier, Calif./St. Paul). Junior Amanda Montalto (Las Vegas, Nev.) scored the final run for the Cardinals as Belmont's Mia Vierra walked senior Lisa Rozanski (Tampa, Fla./Daytona Beach CC) with loaded bases.

In just her first appearance inside the circle for the Cardinals, junior hurler Audrey Workman (Wickenburg, Ariz./Wickenburg) scattered three hits, collected two strikeouts and allowed two walks over five innings.

Versus the Vikings, sophomore Audra Sanders (Lynnville, Ind./Tecumseh) took a no-hitter until the fourth inning when Cleveland State's Dara Toman smashed a home run into left field. Sanders allowed for five hits, a run and two walks, in addition to recording a career-high 12 strikeouts on the day.

Bickel and Collins led the Cardinals at the plate, as the duo combined for five hits in nine appearances and five RBI, while Carpenter tallied the Cardinals' only stolen base.

Ball State returns to action tomorrow as the squad faces UMKC at 11 a.m. and host Austin Peay at 3 p.m. to close out the Austin Peay Spring Invitational. Catch all of the Cardinals' home games at the BSU Softball Complex, starting Thursday, March 24 at 3 p.m. against the Dayton Flyers in a double-header.
