Soccer's Reder And Chew Earn Academic Accolades
November 08, 2011 | Soccer
MUNCIE, Ind. - Ball State soccer junior defenders Brigit Reder (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) and Skylar Chew (Mason, Ohio/Mason) have been named to the Capital One Academic All-District V Third Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Reder and Chew's honors marks the first time in Ball State soccer history that two student-athletes have been recognized as Academic All-District in the same season. The Cardinals have picked up the academic accolades six previous times, including Chew earning Second Team honors last year.
Reder owns a 3.92 GPA in special education and has been a three-year starter on defense for the Cardinals. She earned Second Team All-Mid-American Conference honors this season after leading all MAC defenders in scoring with 16 points and in goals with seven. Her seven goals are the most all-time in Ball State single-season history for a defender while her 16 points are tied for ninth all-time.
Reder anchored the Cardinals' defense which posted six shutouts on the year on its way to a 9-9-3 overall record and a sixth seed in the MAC Tournament. She was named MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week twice this season, which recognizes the top scholar athlete among all sports, while also picking up MAC Defensive Player of the Week (Sept. 12) honors.
Chew owns a 4.0 GPA in psychology and has also been a three-year starter on defense. She picked up Second Team Academic All-District honors last season and becomes the third Cardinal all-time to earn academic honors twice in their careers joining Amy Holt (2005 & 2006) and Dee Nocero (2002 & 2004).
Chew started all 21 games on defense for the Cardinals this season, helping BSU post their most wins since 2008. She scored her first career goal in the season opener against Murray State, notching the game-winning goal in the 46th minute. She also dished out a pair assists in the Cardinals' victories over Bowling Green and Akron.
District V represents Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Ontario and Manitoba. The team includes student-athletes who have a 3.30 GPA or higher and are in their second year or later of athletic competition and are not a first year transfer.
