Field Hockey Returns to BSU Turf for Weekend Slate

MUNCIE, Ind. – Ball State returns to the BSU Turf Field for a pair of weekend contests versus Big 10 foe Michigan State and Mid-American Conference opponent Missouri State Saturday and Sunday at Noon, respectively.
The game Sunday stands as Ball State's annual Think Pink game as the Cardinals recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Donations will benefit the Ball Memorial Cancer Center. Pink field hockey t-shirts will be available for $10 donations as well as “Cardinals Think Pink” bracelets for $1 donations when gates open through halftime.
LAST TIME OUT: Four different freshman scored goals as Ball State defeated Miami, 6-5, Wednesday afternoon at Miami Turf Field. The RedHawks outshot the Cardinals 22-12, and recorded a 10-5 advantage on penalty corners, however the victory marked the season sweep for BSU after the squad shut out MU, 3-0, Sept. 21 at the BSU Turf Field.
Defender Laura Malinoski (Eastampton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional), midfielder Tori Widrick (Cazenovia, N.Y./Cazenovia), midfielder Tarel Teach (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes) and midfielder Sanne Hermans (The Hague, Holland) posted standout showings for Ball State.
Senior forward Devanny Kuhn (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy) provided two assists for the Cardinals, while freshman defender Jenna Rosenberry (Manheim, Pa./Elizabethtown Area) tallied two defensive saves during the contest and senior goalkeeper Chelsea Mitchell (Stevens, Pa./Cocalico) recorded six saves during 70 minutes of action in the cage.
SCOUTING BALL STATE: The Cardinals enter weekend play with a 2-10 record on the season and 2-3 mark in league play as Ball State averages eight shots per game, with Kuhn leading the squad with 3.67 shots per game. Hermans and Kuhn pace the Cardinals with 11 and 10 points, respectively, while Malinoski, Widrick and Teach have each posted two goals on the season.
Goalkeepers Mitchell and Haley Fusting (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy) have shared 840:00 in goal, including tallying 33 and 61 saves, respectively.
SCOUTING MICHIGAN STATE: Under the guidance of first-year head coach Helen Knull, the Spartans finished the 2010 season with a 15-6 record (3-3 Big 10). Michigan State enters weekend play after falling to No. 10 New Hampshire, 5-3, Sunday, Oct. 2 at Ralph Young Field in East Lansing, Mich.
Freshman forward Abby Barker paces the squad with 11 points on the season from five goals and an assist, while redshirt sophomore netminder Molly Cassidy owns a 5-8 record on the season after spending 927:31 in goal, allowing 33 goals and making 86 saves.
SERIES HISTORY: Saturday's contest marks the 19th time Ball State and Michigan State will meet as the Cardinals own the 11-7 series advantage. The teams last met during the 2002 season.
SCOUTING MISSOURI STATE: The Bears finished the 2010 season with a 5-15 overall record and 2-8 tally in MAC play. Missouri State fell to Central Michigan, 5-1, in Mt. Pleasant, Mich. Sunday, Oct. 2, for a 4-8 record on the season (0-4 MAC). Senior forward Casey Bayliss leads the Bears' charge with 20 points, including eight goals and four assists, while sophomore goalkeepers Andrea Bain and Katie Mulloy have shared 770:00 in the cage, allowing 47 goals and tallying 80 saves.
SERIES HISTORY: The contest between Ball State and Missouri State Sunday marks the 21st meeting between the two teams as the Cardinals own the 14-6 all-time series-advantage versus the Bears. The teams last met during the 2010 season as Ball State fell to Missouri State, 4-1, in Springfield, Mo. at Plaster Sports Complex.
The Bears outshot the Cardinals, 19-15, however Ball State tallied a 14-4 advantage on penalty corners. Gretchen Lulow (Ballwin, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) scored the Cardinals' lone goal of the day off a penalty corner at 33:53 mark and Caitlin Maguire (Louisville, Ky./Presentation Academy) provided the assist.
Lulow finished the contest with eight shots, while Kuhn and CJ Hermes (Louisville, Ky./Mercy Academy) recorded one and five shots, respectively. Mitchell tallied 12 saves in 70:00 minutes of action in the cage.
COMING UP ON THE CARDINALS' CALENDAR: Head coach Beth Maddox and the Cardinals head to Mt. Pleasant, Mich. Sunday, Oct. 16 at 1 p.m. to face the Chippewas of Central Michigan at the Field Hockey Complex.
