Field Hockey Hosts Iowa at BSU Turf Field Friday

MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State field hockey team hosts Big 10 opponent Iowa in the Cardinals' final home contest at the BSU Turf Field, Friday at 3 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT: Freshman defender Laura Malinoski (Eastampton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional) scored the lone goal as Ball State fell to Mid-American Conference foe Ohio, 2-1 in overtime, Sunday afternoon on Senior Day at the BSU Turf Field. At 32:32 mark, the Cardinals netted the equalizer after a penalty corner as Malinoski scored on a rebound from the Bobcat's netminder Jen McGill.
Freshman midfielder Sanne Hermans (The Hague, Holland) finished the contest with two shots and senior goalkeeper Chelsea Mitchell (Stevens, Pa./Cocalico) had an outstanding showing for Ball State after tallying nine saves in over 79:00 of action in the cage, including seven in the second period alone.
SCOUTING BALL STATE: The Cardinals own a 4-13 record on the season and 4-5 tally in league play as Ball State averages 9.1 shots per game, with senior forward Devanny Kuhn (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy) leading the squad with 3.59 shots per game, including six goals.
Hermans has recorded 15 points to pace the freshman class, while Malinoski and senior defender Gretchen Lulow (Ballwin, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) have each posted four goals on the season.
Mitchell owns a 3-7 record on the season after recording 680:01 in the cage and 68 saves, while freshman netminder Haley Fusting (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy) has spent 521:42 in goal and posted 61 saves.
SCOUTING IOWA: Under the guidance of 12-year head coach Tracey Griesbaum, Iowa finished the 2010 season with a 3-14 record (0-6 Big 10). Top scorer Kim Scraper paces the squad with 33 points on the season from 16 goals, while junior Kathleen McGraw owns a 13-3 record on the season after accumulating 1083:08 in the cage and 74 saves, allowing 20 goals.
Iowa enters the contest after defeating Pacific, 4-0, Sunday in Evanston, Ill. at Lakeside Field. The Hawkeyes rank 11th in the latest Kookaburra/NFHCA Division I National Coaches' Poll with a 13-3 record on the season.
SERIES HISTORY: The contest versus Iowa Friday marks the 22nd meeting between the two teams as the Hawkeyes own the 19-2 series advantage versus the Cardinals. The teams last met Saturday, Sept. 18, 2010 in Iowa City, Iowa as Ball State fell to Iowa, 2-0, at Grant Field.
The Hawkeyes paced the contest with strong offensive pressure, tallying nine shots and four penalty corners before halftime. The Cardinals were unable to come away with a goal, however Kuhn finished the contest with three shots.
COMING UP ON THE CARDINALS' CALENDAR: Head coach Beth Maddox and the Cardinals head to Springfield, Mo. Sunday at 11 a.m. to face the Bears of Missouri State at Plaster Sports Complex.
