Skylar Chew Named MAC Scholar Athlete Of The Week
October 14, 2011 | Soccer
MUNCIE, Ind. - Ball State junior defender Skylar Chew (Mason, Ohio/Mason) has been named the Mid-American Conference Scholar Athlete of the Week. This is the first honor of Chew's career and the third week the Cardinals have picked up weekly awards as classmate Brigit Reder has earned MAC Scholar Athlete accolades twice (Sept. 16 & Oct. 7).
The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during the week's competition. The winners are selected by a group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
Chew owns a 4.0 G.P.A. in psychology and helped the Cardinals extend their unbeaten streak to five straight games with a 1-0-1 record last weekend. The Cardinals posted a 2-1 victory over MAC East Division leader Akron before posting a 1-1 tie against Ohio.
Chew spear-headed the Cardinals' defense against Akron and Ohio that allowed just two goals on the weekend. She also dished out an assist on the Cardinals' game-winning goal against Akron in the 86th minute of play, her second career assist.
Chew and the Cardinals return to action this afternoon as they host MAC foe Buffalo. Game time is set for 4 p.m. at the Briner Sports Complex.
