Benning's Career High Leads WBB over WMU

MUNCIE, Ind. - Ball State senior guard Ty'Ronda Benning scored a career high 33 points in the Cardinals 67-60 victory over Western Michigan Tuesday night in Worthen Arena. With the win Ball State improves to 6-10 overall and 1-2 in Mid-American Conference action, while WMU falls to 4-12 overall and 0-3 in MAC play.
Benning connected on 10-of-17 field goals, including 6-of-10 from behind the arc, while senior forward Emily Maggert chipped in 10 points and junior center Amber Crago scored six.
The Cardinals managed a 37-24 lead at the half and carried their first half momentum into the second period. BSU's largest advantage of the ball game, 51-30, came after a three pointer from junior guard Megan Craft with 12:30 remaining.
WMU made a comeback late in the game to come within 63-60 under the one minute mark, sending Maggert to the line to shoot two free throws. Maggert made both to secure the victory.
Benning's career night started early as she scored the first seven points in the opening minutes of the game, allowing the Cardinals to build a 7-3 advantage over the Broncos with 17:34 on the clock. Maggert's jumper at the 16:01 mark moved her to fourth all-time in scoring on the Ball State women's basketball list, passing former Cardinal Emma Jones with 1,513 career points.
Ball State led by as many as 14 (23-9) in the first half after a layup from Crago. WMU would rally back to come within eight (30-22) with 4:32 on the clock before the Cardinals would head into intermission up 37-24 over the Broncos.
The Ball State University women's basketball team continues MAC action at home Saturday against Central Michigan in Worthen Arena. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m.
