Track & Field Finishes 10th At MAC Outdoor Championships

BUFFALO, N.Y. - - The Ball State women's outdoor track & field team scored 26 points on the final day of competition at the 2010 Mid-American Conference Championships to finish the meet in 10th place with a three-day total of 38 points.
Kent State won the 12-team meet with 142 points, followed by Akron (104), Western Michigan (102), Central Michigan (86.50), Buffalo (81), Miami (72), Eastern Michigan (65), Toledo (56), Ohio (44.50), BSU, Northern Illinois (19) and Bowling Green (9).
On the final day of competition, the Cardinals were led by a pair of senior hurdlers. In the 100m hurdles, senior Katie Johnson (Evansville, Ind./Harrison H.S.) picked up her second career individual title in the event, winning Saturday's race with a season-fast time of 13.71 to earn 10 points. Johnson also won the event at the 2008 championship meet, while placing second last season behind teammate Amber Williams.
Also turning in a strong individual effort in her final MAC Outdoor Championship was senior Jenna Schmitmeyer (Celina, Ohio/Celina H.S.) with a second-place showing in the 400m hurdles to pick up eight points. Her time of 1:00.86 in the finals was a career-best effort and is the fifth-fastest individual effort in program history.
For their performances on the final day of competition, Johnson was named First Team All-MAC, while Schmitmeyer garnered second team accolades.
In the 400m run, sophomore transfer Renyae Owsley (Indianapolis, Ind./Northwest H.S.) matched her preliminary effort by running to a fifth-place finish in the championship heat, clocking in at 56.58 to earn four more points for the Cardinals.
In the final event of the meet, the Cardinals posted a fifth-place effort in the 4x400m relay (3:47.25), raising the team's final point total for 38 for the meet. Owsley led off the race and was followed by redshirt sophomore Thekla Lorenz (Hamburg, Germany), Schmitmeyer and freshman Judah Smith (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain H.S.).
Lorenz also earn Second Team All-MAC honors after placing second in the heptathlon on Friday.
