Track & Field Ninth After Day Two Of MAC Championships

BUFFALO, N.Y. - - Thanks to a second-place finish from redshirt sophomore Thekla Lorenz (Hamburg, Germany) in the heptathlon, the Ball State women's outdoor track & field team added eight more points to its team total on day two of the 2010 Mid-American Conference Championships hosted by Buffalo. The Cardinals' team total of 12 points have them ninth after seven complete events.
Kent State continues to lead the meet with 54 points, followed by host Buffalo (41), Akron (40), Ohio (30), Western Michigan (29), Miami (23), Toledo (21), Central Michigan (19), BSU, Bowling Green (3) and Northern Illinois (1).
Lorenz finished competition in the heptathlon with a career-best 5,125 points, which is also the second-best individual score in program history. In the final three events of the heptathlon, Lorenz placed fourth in both the long jump (17-11.5/5.47m/691 pts) and javelin throw (115-09/35.28m/577 pts), while taking fifth in the 800m Run (2:23.79/773 pts).
Lorenz finished the opening day of the meet ranked second in the heptathlon with a score of 3,084 points. After opening the event with a fifth-place finish in the 100m hurdles (14.69/883 pts), Lorenz placed eighth in the high-jump an leap of 5-2.5 (1.59m/724 pts). She followed with a second-place throw of 38-9 (11.81m/649 pts) in the shot put, before winning the 200m dash (25.65/828 pts).
In the other two event finals of the second day of the MAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships, senior Sarah Kehe (Westville, Ind./Chesterton H.S.) placed 13th in the 3,000m steeplechase (11:44.57), while Lorenz and junior Lindsay Bangert (Milwaukee, Wis./Homestead H.S.) competed in the long jump, placing 19th (17-6.75/5.35m) and 23rd (16-11.5/5.17m), respectively.
In preliminary action, three Cardinals advanced to Saturday's final round in their respective events. Senior Jenna Schmitmeyer (Celina, Ohio/Celina H.S.) continued her strong effort in the 400m hurdles, placing third in the prelims with a clocking of 1:02.44.
In the 100m hurdles, fellow senior Katie Johnson (Evansville, Ind./Harrison H.S.) also turned in a third-place effort, finishing the event with a season-fast time of 13.93.
Sophomore transfer Renyae Owsley (Indianapolis, Ind./Northwest H.S.) was the final BSU student-athlete to advance to Saturday's finals posting a fifth-place prelim time of 56.52 in the 400m dash.
Competition on the third and final day of the 2010 MAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships begins at 11 a.m. Saturday with finals in both the high jump and discus.
