T&F Seventh After Opening Day Of MAC Championships

?? BUFFALO, N.Y. - - The Ball State women's outdoor track & field team picked up four points on the opening day of the 2010 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships and stand in seventh place after three events.
?? Kent State leads the meet with 25 points, followed by Akron (24), Ohio (18), Buffalo (18), Central Michigan (16), Western Michigan (11), BSU and Toledo (1).
?? The Cardinals four points came in the meet's longest event, as senior ?Ali Bishel (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton H.S.) placed fifth in the 10,000m run with a time of 36:13.11. Joining Bishel in the race for the Cardinals were Kelsey Nielsen (Bremen, Ind./Bremen H.S.) in 18th (39:12.77) and Madeline Goheen (Fort Wayne, Ind./Bishop Dwenger H.S.) in 19th (39:15.83).
?? Redshirt sophomore Thekla Lorenz (Hamburg, Germany) is also poised to score big points, as she finished the opening day ranked second in the heptathlon with a score of 3084. After opening the event with a fifth-place finish in the 100m hurdles (14.69/883 pts), Lorenz struggled in the high-jump with an eight-place leap of 5-2.5 (1.59m/724 pts). However, she quickly rebounded with a second-place throw of 38-9 (11.81m/649 pts) in the shot put, before winning the 200m dash (25.65/828 pts).
?? Lorenz was also BSU's lone competitor in the javelin throw, placing 15th with a distance of 100-04 (30.58m).
?? In the meet's opening event, the hammer throw, senior Tyra Schantz (Bloomfield, Ill./White River Valley H.S.) placed 13th (150-01/45.74m) and junior Jordan Puckett (Washington, Ind./Washington H.S.) earned 17th (138-01/42.10m).
?? Only the top eight performers score at the MAC Championships, with a breakdown of 10 points for first, followed by 8, 6, 5, 4, 3,2 and 1.
?? Action in the three-day meet continues for the Ball State women's squad at 11:30 a.m. Friday beginning with the heptathlon's long jump competition.
