Track & Field Heads To Miami Invitational This Weekend
April 08, 2010 | Track & Field
MUNCIE, Ind. - - After rough weather limited action last weekend, the Ball State women's outdoor track & field team will look to enjoy a warm, sunny forecast this weekend when it travels to Oxford, Ohio for the 2010 Miami Invitational.
Action in the two-day event gets underway at 3:30 p.m. Friday with the women's hammer throw. Saturday, the remainder of the meet takes place starting at 11 a.m. with the discus and the 5,000m run.
Last weekend, the Cardinals competed in six of the 20 events scheduled in the 2010 Mike Poehlein Invitational hosted by Purdue. Rain, strong winds and a lightning storm helped extend the meet to over 10 hours and limited BSU's scheduled competition.
Despite the weather, senior Katie Johnson (Evansville, Ind./Harrison H.S.) turned in a time of 14.31 to place fifth in the 100m hurdles in her first race of the outdoor season. The time currently ranks second in the conference.
Redshirt sophomore Thekla Lorenz (Hamburg, Germany) also turn in a solid 100m hurdle effort, placing 10th overall with a time of 14.88 to rank seventh among all league runners entering the week. Lorenz also posted the league's 17th-best shot put at the meet, with a distance of 37-5.25 (11.41m). Lorenz enters the Miami Invitational ranked among the league's top 20 in a team-high five events.
The Cardinals had three runners place in the top 10 in the 400m dash at the Mike Poehlein Invitational, led by freshman Judah Smith (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain Ohio). Smith's time of 57.57 placed sixth overall and enters the weekend as the seventh-best time among MAC runners.
Sophomore Renyae Owsley (Indianapolis, Ind./Northwest H.S.) and senior Jenna Schmitmeyer (Celina, Ohio/Celina H.S.) also turned in top 10 efforts in the 400m run, with times of 57.98 (eighth) and 58.77 (ninth), respectively. Their efforts rank ninth and 14th, respectively, in the MAC. In addition to her 400m ranking, Schmitmeyer owns the fourth-best time in the league in the 400m hurdles at 1:04.59.
Overall, 14 different Cardinals enter the week ranked in the top 20 in their respective events in the MAC.
