December 17, 2010 | Men's Basketball
MUNCIE, Ind. - Ball State junior forward Jarrod Jones (Michigan City, Ind./Michigan City) has been named the Mid-American Conference Scholar Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Friday. Jones owns a 3.291 GPA as a telecommunications major and is joined by Miami's Courtney Osborn as this week's academic award winners.
The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during the week's competition. The winners are selected by a group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
Jones already earned MAC West Division Player of the Week accolades after leading the Cardinals to back-to-back road victories over Eastern Illinois and Big East foe DePaul. He posted back-to-back double-doubles in the victories, averaging 18.5 points and 12.5 rebounds per game.
Jones scored 20 points and grabbed 13 rebounds at Eastern Illinois to lead the Cardinals to a 58-51 victory. He connected on 9-of-15 from the field at EIU and continued his domination of the Panthers with his third career double-double in three career games.
Jones followed that performance with an impressive 17-point, 12 rebound effort against DePaul. The victory marked the first for the Cardinals over a Big East team since March 16, 1989 when Ball State downed Pittsburgh in the NCAA Tournament (68-64). He connected on 7-of-15 from the field and scored nine of his points down the stretch in the second half to force overtime.
Jones and the Cardinals will be off this week for final exams. Ball State returns to action December 21 as it hosts the College of Mount St. Joseph at 7 p.m.
