November 16, 2010 | Football
Sean Baker and Ian McGarvey have been named the Mid-American Conference West Division Defensive and Special Teams Player of the Week, respectively, for their performances in Ball State's 20-3 win at Buffalo Saturday.
Baker, a junior safety, intercepted two passes and returned a fumble 26 yards for a touchdown. With his first interception in the first quarter, Baker became Ball State's career interceptions leader and his second interception with 13:08 to go in the game was his sixth of the season and 16th of his career. Baker forced a fumble and recovered the loose ball and ran 26 yards for the score to become the first player in Ball State history to return two fumbles for touchdowns in a career.
McGarvey, who won the award for the second straight week, became Ball State's all-time leading scorer in the win at Buffalo. He connected on field goals of 40 and 32 yards and made two extra point attempts to bring his career total to 284 points, passing the previous school record of 279. The senior placekicker, who has a career best of 10 consecutive field goals made, has connected on his last nine field goal attempts.
Ball State will host Northern Illinois Saturday at noon at Scheumann Stadium. The Cardinals are 4-7 overall, including wins in their last two games, and 3-4 in MAC action.
