MUNCIE, Ind. - Ball State travels to play Central Michigan Saturday in Mount Pleasant, Mich. at 1 p.m., before returning to the BSU Turf Field Sunday to host UC Davis in a contest scheduled for 11 a.m.
FROM THE WEEKEND: Ball State hosted its first Mid-American Conferences contests last weekend against Miami and Missouri State. On Friday afternoon, the Cardinals fell, 2-0, to the RedHawks. The two squads finished the contest deadlocked in shots, 10-10, however Miami capitalized on 2-of-5 shots on goal. Junior midfielder Devanny Kuhn (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart) and junior forward Brittany Hammer St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's) tallied seven and three shots during the contest, respectively, while junior midfielder Gretchen Lulow (Ballwin, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) finished with her second defensive save of the season.
On Saturday afternoon, Kuhn scored two goals as the Cardinals defeated the Bears, 2-1. The communication studies major netted the game-winning goal at 78:51 in overtime on an unassisted shot. Kuhn tallied six shots on the day, while senior forward Maura Sawicki (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx Hall) finished with two shots and a defensive save, her first of the season. Junior midfielder Caitlin Maguire (Louisville, Ky./Presentation) tallied three shots, while Lulow and junior forward Kristen Falk (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) tallied one each. Sophomore goalkeeper Morgan Hammer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel Area) and junior netminder Chelsea Mitchell (Stevens, Pa./Cocalico) combined for a total of 10 saves during weekend play.
SCOUTING CENTRAL MICHIGAN: Saturday's game marks the 62nd time Ball State and Central Michigan have met. The Cardinals own a 39-22 all-time record against the Chippewas. The teams met twice last season as Central Michigan defeated Ball State, 4-1, and 4-0. The squad enters weekend play with a 3-7 record (1-1 MAC) after falling to Kent State, 2-0, on Friday and defeating Ohio, 2-1, in double-overtime on Saturday. Junior goalkeeper Anastasia Netto earned this week's State Farm Scholar-Athlete of the Week honor after making 19 saves against the Golden Flashes and the Bobcats, including 10 stops in a shootout victory on Saturday. The Chippewas enter the final weekend of a six-game homestand at the CMU Field Hockey Complex.
SCOUTING UC DAVIS: The contest versus UC Davis Sunday marks the first meeting between the two teams. The Aggies enter the 2010 season under the guidance of second-year head coach Vianney Campos. Last season, the squad became the 15th women's varsity sport overall at UC Davis. Top scorer Nadia Namdari paces the squad with 13 points on the young season. The sophomore from Escondido, Calif. has scored a third of the Aggies' goals since the beginning of the year (5-of-15). Last weekend, UC Davis fell to California, 4-3, and Stanford, 2-1, in two of the Aggies' only home contests at Aggie Stadium this season.
KUHN'S CAREER MARKS: With one more goal (10), Kuhn would double her total of goals scored during the 2009 season. With her team-leading nine goals so far this season, the communication studies major leads all active BSU scorers with 16 career goals and her 40 career points stand as the most among active BSU players.
BALL STATE ON THE RISE: Halfway through the season, Ball State has tallied a 4-6 record (1-3 MAC). Last season, the squad recorded just four wins overall.
