Field Hockey Concludes Regular-Season Play This Week

MUNCIE, Ind. - Ball State travels to play No. 6 Ohio State Wednesday at 3 p.m. and Miami Friday at 1 p.m. before returning to the BSU Turf Field Sunday to host Central Michigan in a contest scheduled for 1 p.m.
Against the Chippewas, seniors Ellen Vonderbrink (Kettering, Ohio/Fairmont), Morgan Cloutier (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill), Maura Sawicki (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx Hall), Elizabeth Blaum (Wilkes Barre, Pa./Wyoming Seminary), Hannah Jones (Louisville, Ky./Dupont Manual) and Kaitlan Mitchell (Stevens, Pa./Cocalico) will play in their last home game at the BSU Turf Field as the team celebrates Senior Day.
FROM THE WEEKEND: On Friday, junior midfielder Gretchen Lulow (Ballwin, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) scored a goal, but Ball State fell to MAC opponent Missouri State, 1-4, at the Plaster Sports Complex. The Bears outshot the Cardinals, 19-15, however Ball State tallied a 14-4 advantage on penalty corners. Lulow scored Ball State's lone goal of the day off a penalty corner at 33:53 mark, her fourth of the season. Junior midfielder Caitlin Maguire (Louisville, Ky./Presentation Academy) provided the assist. Lulow, an exercise science major, finished the contest with eight shots, while junior midfielder Devanny Kuhn (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy) tallied five shots. Vonderbrink and junior midfielder CJ Hermes (Louisville, Ky./Mercy Academy) each recorded one shot.
Sunday afternoon, Vonderbrink scored the game-winning goal as Ball State defeated non-conference opponent Indiana, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at the BSU Turf Field in double overtime. The Hoosiers outshot the Cardinals, 19-13, and tallied a 17-6 advantage on penalty corners. Kunn and Maguire both finished the contest with two shots, while junior forward Kristen Falk (Pennsburg, Pa./Perkiomen) and Lulow tallied three shots apiece. Cloutier and Sawicki completed the contest with a shot apiece. Sawicki, an elementary education major, recorded two defensive saves against the Bears and Hoosiers, for a season total of 11. On the weekend, Ball State junior goalkeeper Chelsea Mitchell (Stevens, Pa./Cocalico) tallied 21 saves in the cage.
SCOUTING OHIO STATE: Wednesday's game marks the 17th time Ball State and Ohio State have met, as the Buckeyes own a 9-7 all-time series advantage against the Cardinals. The two squads met last season as Ohio State claimed a 5-0 shutout victory against Ball State on Sept. 22 at the BSU Turf Field. Kuhn led the Cardinals with two shots, while Blaum and junior defender Katie Norris (Louisville, Ky./Mercy Academy) each tallied a defensive save. Ball State goalkeeper Tiffany Shifflett finished the contest with 10 saves in the cage. Ohio State enters the week with a 13-3 record (4-1 Big 10) after posting a 2-1 victory against No. 12 Michigan on Friday and recording a 4-0 shutout of UC Davis on Saturday. Junior midfielder Aisling Coyle paces the Buckeyes charge with 47 points. The native of Glasgow, Scotland has accumulated nearly half (21-of-54) of Ohio State's goals this season.
SCOUTING MIAMI: Friday's game marks the 60th time Ball State and Miami have met, as the Cardinals own a 43-16 all-time series advantage against the RedHawks. The teams met earlier this season on Oct. 5 as Miami tallied a 2-0 shutout of Ball State at the BSU Turf Field. Kuhn and junior forward Brittany Hammer (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) tallied seven and three shots during the contest, respectively, while Lulow finished with a defensive save. Ball State sophomore goalkeeper Morgan Hammer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel Area) recorded two saves in the cage. The RedHawks enter the week with an 11-6 record (6-2 MAC) after defeating the Missouri State Bears, 3-2, in overtime Sunday. Mary Hull, Jackie Nguyen, Emily Gruesser, Christine Brightwell and Kate Snyder lead Miami's charge, combining for 107 points as a group on the season. The RedHawks received two votes in the latest Kookaburra/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll.
SCOUTING CENTRAL MICHIGAN: Sunday's game marks the 63rd time Ball State and Central Michigan have met as the Cardinals own a 40-22 all-time record against the Chippewas. The two teams met earlier this season on Oct. 9 as Ball State defeated Central Michigan, 3-2 in overtime at the CMU Field Hockey Complex. The Chippewas outshot the Cardinals, 15-5, however Ball State capitalized on 3-of-4 shots on goal. Falk scored her first goal of the season and Kuhn netted the equalizer and game-winning goals. Lulow finished the contest with two assists, while Sawicki recorded a defensive save and Jones tallied one shot. Chelsea Mitchell tallied four saves in 71:03 minutes in the cage. The Chippewas enter the week with a 4-12 record (2-6 MAC) after falling to Ohio, 3-0, Saturday and Kent State, 8-1, Sunday. Erin Dye, Juliana Makrinos and Brooke Sihota lead Central Michigan's charge, combining for 25 points as a group on the season.
BALL STATE'S DOMINATING DEFENSE: With her team-leading 11 defensive saves so far this season, Sawicki leads all active BSU players with 13 career defensive saves. She has accounted for over half of the Cardinals defensive saves so far this season (11-of-20) and ranks first in the NCAA in defensive saves. Also, against Ohio, Chelsea Mitchell tallied a game-high 12 saves, the highest single-game total among all active BSU goalkeepers.
KUHN'S CAREER TRACKER: With 15 goals, Kuhn has doubled her total of goals scored during both the 2008-09 seasons (7). Also, with her team-leading 15 goals so far this season, the communication studies major leads all active BSU scorers with 22 career goals and her 52 career points stand as the most among active BSU players. Kuhn stands two goals shy of breaking Chantelle Isaac's record of 23 goals (2003-05) and 15 goals short of breaking Lindsay Quay's career record of 37 goals (2003-06).
BALL STATE ON THE RISE: Nearing the end of regular-season play, Ball State owns a 6-10 record (2-6 MAC). Last season, the Cardinals recorded just four wins overall.
