Four Football Student-Athletes Receive Academic All-MAC Awards

Ian McGarvey, a junior kicker for the Ball State University football team last fall, and Briggs Orsbon, a sophomore wide receiver for the Cardinals, were each named to the 2009 Academic All-Mid-American Conference Football Team.
Ball State's sophomore offensive lineman Kreg Hunter and sophomore defensive end/tight end Andrew Puthoff received honorable mention on the team, which is selected by the league's faculty athletic representatives.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade-point average.
McGarvey, a psychology major with a 3.54 GPA, set the Ball State career record with 81 consecutive extra points made, shattering the previous mark of 40. He connected on a career long 48-yard field goal vs. New Hampshire and at Western Michigan last fall. McGarvey tied his career high with three field goals made in a game four times in 2009. He ranked first in the MAC and ninth in the nation in field goals per game. McGarvey was a co-recipient of Ball State's 2009 Bill Reynolds Special Teams Award. McGarvey was also an Academic All-MAC First-Team selection in 2008.
Orsbon owns a perfect 4.0 GPA as a business major at Ball State. He led the Cardinals with 51 receptions and 461 receiving yards last season. Orsbon managed a season high 10 catches for a season best 88 receiving yards vs. Toledo, and tallied his first receiving touchdown of the year vs. the Rockets. Orsbon also managed 10 catches for 82 yards vs. Temple.
Hunter, an industrial technology and construction management major with a 3.40 GPA, started all 12 games in 2009 and has played in 24 of 25 games in his career. He blocked for an offense that gained over 3,500 yards in 2009 and a school record 5,972 total yards in offense in 2008.
Puthoff, a physical education major with a 3.41 GPA, tied for sixth for the Cardinals in tackles for loss with 3.5. He played in all 12 games and started the final two of the season as a tight end. Puthoff caught his first career pass vs. Central Michigan and added another reception in the season finale at Western Michigan.
Ball State will open the 2010 season Thurs., Sept. 2 vs. Southeast Missouri State at Scheumann Stadium.
