MUNCIE, Ind. – Former Ball State men's basketball standout Anthony Newell (Chicago, Ill./Simeon) has signed a professional contract with the Assigeco Casalpusterlengo basketball team in the Italy-A dilettanti league.
“It is a great opportunity for Anthony to begin his professional basketball career in a top tier league in Italy,” BSU head coach Billy Taylor said. “We are proud and excited that he has worked his way back from last year's injury. He has earned a tremendous basketball opportunity.”
Newell, a team tri-captain last year, led the Cardinals in scoring at 15.2 points per game and in rebounding at 9.4 caroms per game before suffering a season-ending leg injury 13 games into the 2008-09 campaign. He scored in double figures in all 13 games and recorded a Mid-American Conference best six double-doubles during the opening stretch.
Newell, a preseason All-MAC selection, ended his Ball State career with 995 points to finish 25th all-time in BSU scoring history. He also grabbed 585 career rebounds in 86 games to finish 12th all-time in Cardinals' history on the glass.
