WVB Suffers Hard-Fought 3-1 Setback To Coastal Carolina
August 29, 2009 | Women's Volleyball
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - - Despite strong play from a pieced together line-up, the Ball State (0-3) women's volleyball team suffered a hard-fought 3-1 (20-25, 27-25, 25-21, 25-20) setback to Coastal Carolina (1-2) Saturday evening in its final match of the Mortar Board Premier Tournament hosted by Purdue.
In an effort to offset the loss of two of the team's top passers, the Cardinals turned to Brittany McGinnis (Fraser, Mich./Fraser H.S.) on the outside and put redshirt-freshman Andrea Felton (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower H.S.) at the setter position. The ploy worked out in the opening frame, as BSU captured its first set victory of the season at 25-20.
In her first collegiate match on the left side, McGinnis posted her first career kill/dig double-double by smashing a career-high 11 kills to go along with 16 digs. McGinnis also represented the Cardinals on the Mortar Board Premier All-Tournament team. In her first match as BSU's setter, Felton dished out a career-best 44 assists while guiding the team to a season-high .190 (56-25-163) attack percentage.
Julie Breivogel (Boonville, Ind./Boonville H.S.), who recorded her 1,000th career kill in Saturday's morning match versus Dayton, led all attackers with a season-high 22 kills, pushing her career total to 1,022 kills. Christie Waters (Muncie, Ind./Burris H.S.), who served as BSU's libero for the second-straight match, added a career-high 21 digs in the backrow.
Chelsy Kimes led the Coastal Carolina attack with 14 kills, while Jill Nyhof added 12, including the match-winner. Overall, the BSU defense limited the Chanticleers attack to a .179 (52-22-168) success rate.
The Cardinals jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the opening set, led by a McGinnis kill and a Kaylee Schembra (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli H.S.) service ace. A Jennifer Boyd (Evans City, Pa./Seneca Valley H.S.) kill moments later led to a 4-1 BSU advantage. Coastal Carolina would rally back, however, scoring eight of the next 10 points to pull ahead 9-6.
The Chanticleers maintained the three-point edge at the 12-9 mark before a kill from Breivogel sparked a 4-1 run that knotted the score at 13. Ball State regained the lead moments later, at 16-15, after a kill from McGinnis and a solo stuff from Breivogel.
After Coastal Carolina tied the score at 17, five-straight Ball State kills (including three from Breivogel, one from Kakatolis and one from Boyd) allowed BSU to pull ahead 23-17. The Cardinals went on to win the set 25-20 on Breivogel's sixth kill of the frame.
McGinnis opened the second stanza with kills on two of the first three plays, as Ball State surged out to a 4-0 advantage. The Chanticleers fought back with five of the next six points to tie the set at 5-5. From there, the teams battled to a 12-12 tie.
Back-to-back service aces from Boyd gave the Cardinals a brief bit of momentum before Coastal Carolina responded with a 6-1 run to pull ahead 18-15. The Cardinals rattled off the next four points to regain a one-point edge at 19-18. From there the teams battled to a 25-25 tie before a kill from Coastal Carolina's Nyhof and a BSU attack error ended the game at 27-25 and tied the match at one set apiece.
A Boyd kill opened the third frame, while McGinnis added three-straight floor shots, as Ball State built a 4-0 lead. The lead was short-lived, however, as the Chanticleers pulled off a 9-2 run to force BSU to use its first timeout trailing 9-6.
Despite another McGinnis kill on the next play, Coastal Carolina pulled ahead by six at 15-9. The Cardinals were able to chip the lead down to three points on two occasions, but the Chanticleers would reach set point at 24-17. Solo blocks from Boyd and Breivogel helped the Cardinals rally off the next four points, but it was not enough as Coastal Carolina won the set 25-21 on a kill from Amanda Russell.
Three early kills from Breivogel helped the Cardinals build a 4-1 lead in the fourth set, but once again the Chanticleers answered the call, tying the set at 7-7. With the score tied at 10-10, Coastal Carolina's Nyhof posted a solo block and a pair of kills to push the score to 13-10.
Ball State was able to battle back within one point at 15-14, but four consecutive Coastal Carolina points put the frame out of reach, and the Chanticleers went on to win the set 25-20 on a kill from Nyhof.
The Ball State women's volleyball team returns to action Friday, when it opens play in the 2009 Active Ankle Challenge versus IPFW at 7:30 p.m.
