August 19, 2009 | Field Hockey
Ball State defense, led by senior goalkeeper Tiffany Shifflett, kept the game close early, but a pair of second half goals by Indiana rallied the Hoosiers to a 3-0.
In addition to Shifflett's defense, Ball State junior Morgan Cloutier managed two defensive saves, while freshman Leann Carroll managed one defensive save for the Cardinals. Shifflett tallied 18 saves in the contest.
Indiana took a 1-0 lead after the first half behind a goal from Brenna Moeljadi with 21:31 remaining. The goal came off an IU corner with assists to Alina Valenti and Katie Griswold.
Indiana's same combination of Valenti, Griswold and Moeljadi scored again off an IU corner with 31:32 left in the contest to take a 2-0 lead over the Cardinals.
Indiana managed its third goal of the game on a corner play with 13:05 left in the contest when Valenti recorded her third assist of the contest on a goal by Morgan Fleetwood.
Ball State, under the direction of seventh-year head coach Annette Payne, opens the 2009 regular season Aug. 29, at Davidson and Aug. 30 vs. Appalachian State at Davidson.
