May 11, 2009 | Baseball
MUNCIE, Ind. ? Ball State senior right-hander Brenden Stines (Granger, Ind./Penn) has been named the Mid-American Conference West Division Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced Monday. Stines' honor marks the 10th time this season that a Cardinal has earned weekly honors and he is the third Cardinals' pitcher to earn weekly accolades.
Stines helped the Cardinals to a three-game series sweep of MAC West rival Northern Illinois as he turned in his top performance of the season in Ball State's 9-1 victory Saturday afternoon. He tallied his third win of the season as he worked seven-strong innings, allowing only three hits. Stines struck out a career-high 11 batters and did not allow an earned run in the gem for the Cardinals. He improved to 3-4 on the year with the victory and owns a 5.14 ERA, which is eighth in the MAC this season, in 56.0 innings.
Stines joins junior center fielder Jeremy Hazelbaker (Selma, Ind./Wapahani), sophomore right-hander/third baseman Kolbrin Vitek (Bryan, Ohio/Bryan), junior right-hander Brad Piatt (Galveston, Ind./Lewis Cass), junior left fielder Kory Benbow (Muncie, Ind./Cowan) and freshman first baseman Ian Nielsen (La Porte, Ind./La Porte) as MAC West weekly award winners this season.
Stines and the Cardinals will wrap up non-conference action Tuesday afternoon as they travel to Ann Arbor, Mich., for a doubleheader against the Michigan Wolverines at 3:15 p.m. Ball State concludes the regular season with a three-game series against MAC West leader Toledo at Ball Diamond Thursday through Saturday. The winner of the three-game series between the Cardinals and Rockets will claim the MAC West Division championship.
