Women's Golf Fifth at MAC After Day One

The Ball State women's golf team, under the direction of head coach Katherine Mowat, is tied for fifth at the 2009 Mid-American Conference Championships being played at Longaberger Golf Course in Nashport, Ohio. The event will continue with 18 holes Saturday and 18 Sunday.
The Cardinals are tied with Toledo for fifth place, while 18th ranked Kent State is leading the field. Eastern Michigan is second, followed by Western Michigan and Akron.
Brittany Kelly is leading Ball State and is tied for 12th in the championships after firing an 84-79=163 in windy conditions Friday. Rachael Pruett is tied for 15th after carding an 87-78=165 in the first two rounds. Kirsty O'Connor, who worked through a first round 89, rebounded with a 78 in the second round to move into 20th place. Sarah Windlan and Kristtini Cain are tied for 32nd in the field. Windlan managed an 85-89, while Cain tallied an 86-88.
Longaberger Golf Course was selected Ohio's No. 1 Public Course by Golf Magazine in 2008, and was built by legendary course architect Arthur Hills. Longaberger also inlcudes a 25-acre natural grass driving range and practice facility with target greens and a chipping, pitching and bunker area.
Joining the Cardinals at the MAC Championships will be Akron, Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan, Kent State, Northern Illinois, Ohio, Toledo and Western Michigan. Ball State placed fifth out of eight teams a year ago, while Kent State claimed the title.
The Cardinals have won three tournaments this season -- the Ball State Cardinal Classic, the Iowa Hawkeye Invitational and the Eastern Kentucky El Diablo Invitational. At the Cardinal Classic, Ball State set a school record for low 18-hole round with four counters when they carded a 292 in the first round. The Cardinals also set a school record for low 36 holes with a 594 to win the event.
