Tennis Competes In MAC Championship Thursday

MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State University men's and women's tennis teams will compete at the Mid-American Conference Championships in Buffalo, NY and Bowling Green, Ohio, respectively.

The men earned a fourth seed in the upcoming MAC championship after losing 4-3 at Cardinal Creek Tennis Center to Northern Illinois. It was a three-way tie for second between Ball State, Toledo and NIU but after the tiebreaker the Cardinals were seeded fourth. Ball State takes on host Buffalo who is the No. 5 seed in a 10 am match Thursday. The Cardinals defeated the Bulls earlier this season at Buffalo by a score of 6-1.

In his 36th season at the helm of the Cardinals, Bill Richards has guided his team to 35 and/or MAC Championships. Ball State last claimed the MAC Championship title in 2006. BSU enters this seasons championship 11-11 overall and 3-2 in the MAC.

"We have had two very tough losses over the last 2 weekends; matches we had won and yet found a way to lose," said Richards. "I am not sure how this team will react to the disappointment. Hopefully we will play to prove something but you never know."

The women travel to Bowling Green Thursday to take on No. 8 Northern Illinois with the match beginning at Noon. The Cardinals are seeded ninth in the upcoming MAC Championship. Ball State lost to the Huskies earlier this season at the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center by a score of 4-3. The Cardinals enter the championship with a 5-13 overall record and are 0-8 in MAC play.
