Track & Field Wins Five Events at Miami Invitational

Miami, OHIO - - The Ball State outdoor track and field team accumulated five victories and 17 overall top-five finishes at the Miami Invitational Saturday.
The Cardinals continued their success in the 100m and 200m dashes. In the 100m, fifth-year senior Amber Williams came away victorious (12.09) and freshman Janae Taylor placed fourth (12.38).
In the 200m, the duo of Williams and Taylor finished first (25.18) and second (25.24), respectively.
Williams won her third event in the 100m hurdles by setting an NCAA regional qualifying mark (13.84) with teammates junior Katie Johnson and sophomore Thekla Lorenz following closely behind in third (14.14) and sixth (15.03).
BSU also claimed three competitors in the top six in the 800m run. Junior Brittany Ade registered a victory (2:17.97) for the Cardinals, and was followed by freshman Christine Talhelm in third (2:20.14) and sophomore Brandi Robinson in sixth (2:24.94).
Junior Ali Bishel was BSU's lone competitor in the 5000m run, where she finished second (17:18.15) in her first action of the outdoor season.
Junior Jenna Schmitmeyer registered a second-place clocking of 1:04.21 in the 400m hurdles and Johnson finished right behind her in third (1:04.22).
Schmitmeyer and fifth-year senior Christina Whitt finished together in the 400m dash, placing seventh (58.45) and eighth (58.77), respectively.
BSU's 4x100 relay squad of Johnson, Taylor, Williams, and Whitt captured another win (46.18) for the Cardinals.
Senior Jessica Genovese tallied a third place finish in the high jump (5-3) and was joined in the top 10 by freshman Ebony James (sixth/5-1) and senior Lauren McNichols (eighth/4-11).
Sophomores Lindsay Bangert and Thekla Lorenz rounded out the top five in the long jump with finishes in fourth (17-8 1/4) and fifth(17-6 3/4), respectively.
Finishing in the top ten in the triple jump were senior Lanae Stovall (fourth/34-4) and freshman Megan Cherry (seventh/33-8).
In the 3000m steeplechase, junior Sarah Kehe notched a fifth-place finish (11:37.93).
Junior Tyra Schantz recorded finishes of sixth in the hammer throw (149-5) and ninth in the discus throw (118-9).
Sophomore Jordan Puckett earned a toss of 93-7 to finish eighth in the javelin.

MUNCIE, Ind. - - The Ball State outdoor track and field team will look to carry its early season success on the road when it travels to Miami, Ohio for the Miami Invitational Friday and Saturday. The Cardinals will face-off against student-athletes from 17 different schools, including Mid-American Conference rival Miami, whom BSU tied with at the MAC Indoor Championships for third place.
Last week at the Mike Poehlein Invitational, BSU turned in three victories among other solid performances that currently rank in the top five in six separate MAC categories.
Fifth-year senior Amber Williams built upon her accomplishments from the indoor season, winning the 100m dash by clocking a time of 12.05 which ranks fourth in the conference.
Junior Katie Johnson, BSU's lone 2008 MAC Outdoor Champion, ranks second in the league in the 100m hurdles (14.08) after posting a victory in the event last weekend.
Williams and Johnson were also a part of the 4x100 relay squad that registered a first-place clocking of 46.59, a time that's good enough for second best in the MAC. Sophomore Ra'Jae Marable and freshman Janae Taylor also had legs in the first-place effort.
Taylor also finished second in the 200m dash (24.62) and fourth in the 100m dash (12.05). Her 200m dash mark is slotted as the second-best MAC time as well.
Junior Jenna Schmitmeyer finished second in the 400-meter hurdles (1:03.25), another second-best time in the conference to date.
Johnson and Schmitmeyer, along with sophomore Thekla Lorenz and freshman Kelsey Stephens, finished second in the 4x400 relay with the third-best mark in the MAC (3:52.36).
The only event that the Cardinals will compete in Friday at the Miami Invitational is the hammer throw at 3:30 p.m. Action is slated to begin Saturday at 11 a.m. with the discus throw. The final event of the day is set for 6:15 p.m. with the 4x400 relay.
