February 11, 2009 | Track & Field
MUNCIE, Ind. - - After turning in two Mid-American Conference-leading times Saturday (Feb. 11) at the Meyo Invitational, fifth-year senior Amber Williams (Fort Wayne, Ind./Concordia Lutheran H.S.) has been named the MAC Women's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week, as announced by the league office Feb. 11.
The honor marks the third time Williams has garnered MAC Track Athlete of the Week accolades in her career, and the first this season.
“We are really pleased to have Amber back this year after redshirting last year,” said BSU head coach Randy Heisler. “So far she has been healthy and as the competition has gotten better and better for her she has run faster and faster. “
Williams sprinted to season and conference-bests times in the 60m dash (7.54) and 200m dash (24.56), defeating three student-athletes from No. 15 Minnesota and one from No. 3 Michigan in the 60m dash final and one runner from No. 15 Minnesota and one from No. 3 Michigan in the 200m dash final.
A 2007 NCAA All-American, Williams also leads the league in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.44, which she turned in while breaking the Indiana Wesleyan University Indoor Sports Complex track record at the IWU Invitational (Jan. 31). The time is .01 of a second shy of the NCAA Women's Indoor Track & Field provisional qualifying mark of 8.43.
“So far this season, Amber has run strong and her training in preparation for the conference meet is going really well,” said Heisler. “We have a home meet Feb. 20th which will be our last tune-up before the conference meet. By all indications, Amber should be ready.”
The Cardinals will return to action for their lone home meet of the season when they host the Ball State Quadrangular Friday, Feb. 20.
