Soccer Flies Past Air Force, 1-0

“It was great to get our first win of the season tonight, but it was even better that it came from a total team effort,” Lovett said. “The entire team stepped up and played fast, strong and together as a unit. I am proud of our team and especially our defensive effort. Our back line and Rachael Murphy played inspired tonight and turned in their best performances of the season.”

“Our high pressure all over the field was a huge factor in disrupting their attack,” Lovett said. “It is great to get my first win as a coach but it is even better seeing this team continue to make strides each and every game we play. Tonight we turned in a full 90 minute effort as a team and good things come when do that.”
The Cardinals continued to set the pace of the game in the second half as their defensive unit kept Air Force at bay.
Air Force (0-4-0) put some pressure on the Cardinals as the Falcons had a dangerous corner kick in the 71st minute. Cassie Wilson was able to get a shot off on the corner kick but Murphy was there to nullify the effort.
Murphy came up with a game-changing save in the 74th minute to keep the Falcons off of the scoreboard. Air Force forward Rachael Emory got behind the Cardinals' defense on a breakaway. Emory was one-on-one with Murphy and ripped a shot from 15-yards out but Murphy smothered the shot to keep the shutout in hand.
Murphy finished the game with three saves to earn her first shutout of the season and her 18th career shutout. She is now tied with former Cardinal Alison Becker for the BSU career record for shutouts with 18. Wallace picked up the loss for Air Force as she allowed the goal in the first half and made a save while Curtis notched one save in the second half.
