Freshman Wins Medalist Honors; Women's Golf Wins
August 25, 2007 | Women's Golf
ANGOLA, Ind. -- Freshman Brittany Kelly drained a 20-foot birdie putt on the second playoff hole in soggy conditions Saturday to defeat fellow Cardinal Amy Roberts and earn medalist honors in her first collegiate event.
Behind identical scores of 77 from Kelly and Roberts, the Cardinals carded a team score of 315 -- six strokes better than second-place Indianapolis -- to win the nine-team Thunder Fall Invitational played at Zollner Golf Course in Angola.
"We had a two-hour rain delay today so the course was playing real tough," said BSU head coach Katherine Mowat. "For the first event of the season, I am pleased. We had some good performances by our young team. I think our team got a glimpse of what we can do."
The Cardinals' lineup Saturday included three newcomers playing for the first time at BSU -- Kelly, freshman Rachael Pruett and sophomore Paige Esford.
Pruett finished tied for eighth with an 81, while Esford was 13th with an 83.
Roberts finished second by virtue of the playoff, while Kirsty O'Connor tied for fifth with an 80.
Individually, Sarah Windlan posted a 78 to tie for third overall, while Melissa Miller's 80 tied for fifth. Ashley Burgess tied for 29th with a 94.
Ball State returns to action Sept. 10 with the MAC Tournament Preview to be held at Brickyard Crossing in Indianapolis.
