April 12, 2007 | Men's Golf
MUNCIE, Ind. -- Wayne Denger (Lebanon, Ind./Lebanon H.S.), a senior member of the Ball State men's golf team, has been named the Mid-American Conference Men's Golfer of the Week, according to the league office which announced the award April 11.
Denger shares the weekly honor with Akron's Brad Wright.
"This is a deserving honor for Wayne," said BSU head coach Mike Fleck. "Wayne and our team played some pretty good golf last week in difficult conditions at the Marshall Invitational. I think the tournament really allowed our team to see how good we can be if we all play well together. Wayne was a big part of that."
Denger tied for fourth overall out of the 92 competitiors at the Marshall Invitational, played in frigid and snowy conditions at Guyan Golf Club in Huntington, W. Va.
He opened the snow-shortened event with a two-under par round of 69, before following with a round of 72 in the final 18 holes.
As a team the Cardinals shot a 282 team score behind Denger's 69 to lead the 17-team event after round one. In the difficult conditions, Ball State posted a second-round 295 to tie for second overall.
Ball State's two-round team score of 577 placed ahead of the other six MAC schools at the event, while Denger and Wright were the top league golfers at the tournament.
